---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Text of TeleFinder Chat from Tuesday, January 6, 1998 - 11 AM PDT. In attendance: From Spider Island: Rusty Tucker, Sysops: Daniel O'Leary, Jim Leary, Bob Nunn, Ken Sutherland, mikael fredriksson, Jim Smith, Donald McHose, Bob Wright, Kevin Shearon. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rusty Tucker: <> Daniel O'Leary: <> Jim Leary: <> Jim Leary: You'll have to look at the file that I sent to see how I set it up. I'm confused again. Don't want to make any more changes until we find the solution. I did save the previous one before I added all the Photo Template lines, so I can revert to that if necessary Daniel O'Leary: Rusty, my attempts to download TFS 5.6.1.sea are aborting. Daniel O'Leary: The window is just disappearing... no error msg. Rusty Tucker: hey Rusty Tucker: back now Rusty Tucker: maybe its the one I'm uploading now Rusty Tucker: TeleFinder v5.6.1.sea ? Daniel O'Leary: Hehe... yes, The xfer says complete, but I got a zero k file. Daniel O'Leary: Need to add a dialog that says the file is busy being uploaded. Bob Nunn: <> Rusty Tucker: hola Bob! Bob Nunn: Hey! Rusty Tucker: I've been learning the joys of PPP this week :( Daniel O'Leary: Good job Rusty, now you can share the misery. Bob Nunn: Glad not to have to deal with it. Rusty Tucker: I think I've found a way to have TF keep the connection up... Rusty Tucker: seems to work so far using Apple's PPP... don';t know if it will work w/ free PPP yet Daniel O'Leary: That will be good for TF, can you share it so that other apps (Netscape, and other servers) can work also? Ken Sutherland: <> Rusty Tucker: I'm working with Apple's DTS to see if this solution is reliable or not mikael fredriksson: <> Daniel O'Leary: Man, the first guy in this room gets squeezed to the right, grin. mikael fredriksson: RT: where are the chat logger? Jim Smith: <> Daniel O'Leary: DTS Rusty? Rusty Tucker: not online today. I'll log it Daniel O'Leary: Dev Tech Services? Rusty Tucker: Developer Technical Support == DTS Daniel O'Leary: Ah, I was close. Rusty Tucker: Dan, did you get your scripting problem solved? Rusty Tucker: BTW -- new Phone numbers for Spider Island: Rusty Tucker: 1 714 508 9366 for voice Rusty Tucker: 1 714 508 9233 for fax ( but I'm using it for voice today ) Daniel O'Leary: Not yet Rusty, any applescript command to tell TF server to go offline node xxx still just talks to the "Gateway Node" Rusty Tucker: the mailing address is 4790 Irvine Boulevard, Suite 105-347, Irvine, CA 92620 Rusty Tucker: The dialup lines will go away this weekend or next Rusty Tucker: from then on it will be TCP-IP access only Rusty Tucker: I get to figure out how to connect a router to an ISDN modem this weekend :) Ken Sutherland: <> Daniel O'Leary: I am able to get Mail Server to quit and relaunch, but I cannot speak to the TCP nodes individually. Daniel O'Leary: Hello Again Ken. Rusty Tucker: You need to add the 'genn' parameter to the Apple Event, not sure how that's done in AppleScript Daniel O'Leary: Ken, please add my (reliable) system to your OAT distribution nodes. (frin) Daniel O'Leary: notes... Bob Nunn: Rusty, I've been using Analog for a couple of weeks now and really like it. Could you set the Webserver.log up to where it increments daily? Rusty Tucker: anyone catch the Keynote via RealAudio? Rusty Tucker: I ran out of time to add that to 5.6 Bob Rusty Tucker: It can be done via Apple Script though... Rusty Tucker: rename the log file Ken Sutherland: <> Rusty Tucker: then reset the web server Ken Sutherland: <> Rusty Tucker: it will then close the old file, and create a new webserver.log Bob Nunn: Was thinking about that. Could have that done after Analog runs each evening. Good. Kevin Shearon: <> Rusty Tucker: should be ok if you have Mail Server run the script for you at midnight Daniel O'Leary: I am using analog too... way cool, but which I could customize the report more like I did with Webstat and Server stat, am also getting "invalid log lines" I suspect by the server startup notices. Rusty Tucker: yep, it analog should just skip over those ( in 5.6.1 ) Daniel O'Leary: It does, but it reports them... Rusty Tucker: it barfs on the lines in 5.6, that's the difference between 5.6 and 5.6.1 Daniel O'Leary: That was what killed my systems' access while I was away for new years. Daniel O'Leary: Server Stat really blew chunks on them, and threw up a dialog box that held up all TF servers but the web server for some reason. Daniel O'Leary: The web server kept right on going. Rusty Tucker: :) strange Rusty Tucker: not sure why a dialog would affect the nodes and not the web server.. Daniel O'Leary: Can only tell you that it did, perhaps interfering with the periodic node reset??? Rusty Tucker: i wouldn't think so Rusty Tucker: That's like a problem I still have with PPP Rusty Tucker: even though I can reset the connection, I can't get rid of the PPP alerts saying "you've been disconnected" and "the modem is not responding" Daniel O'Leary: Need to go in and flush that buffer, eh? Rusty Tucker: Bob, what ISDN modem are you using now? Bob Nunn: Just using the Ascend box 85. Rusty Tucker: does it have a built-in router? Daniel O'Leary: The 75 does. Bob Nunn: Yes, I paid a 100 more for a 4 port router built in. Jim Leary: <> Rusty Tucker: 4 serial ports? Rusty Tucker: how much altogether? Bob Nunn: Nope Ethernet ports. Kinda expensive for a 4 ports. Rusty Tucker: NetCom is recommending the 3Com Access or Netopia Daniel O'Leary: My ISP is using 3Com and Ascend. Rusty Tucker: I should be able to plug them into one of my routers Bob Nunn: I get a corporate deal thru MacWhse. I wouldn't have done it except ISP using ASCEND and set it up with me. Rusty Tucker: I have a CISCO 2500 and a Livingston Portmaster Daniel O'Leary: Love that Portmaster. Daniel O'Leary: If you want to get rid of one, please consider me!! Rusty Tucker: both have a serial port that I should be able to use Daniel O'Leary: You can do that Rusty. I have set them up here. Rusty Tucker: I'll want to sell the one that I don't use for ISDN Jim Smith: Rusty: I am using WebRamp, setup is a snap, as long as Telco has ISDN set up correctly. Daniel O'Leary: I want to buy it... Rusty Tucker: also a 2x66 BeBox! Daniel O'Leary: Damn! Rusty Tucker: Quadra 700, Mac II CI, Work Group Server 60, maybe a Power Mac 7100 Daniel O'Leary: I am not sure which of your routers would be better, I just know the Livingston. Donald McHose: <> Rusty Tucker: + a handful of 28.8 modems Rusty Tucker: The livingston seems easier to work with Rusty Tucker: + it uses standard serial ports, and the CISCO needs a special cable Rusty Tucker: both are very solid routers Daniel O'Leary: How many serial ports is your Portmaster? Rusty Tucker: I think 1 or 2 Rusty Tucker: I use one for modem now, and the other for the DSU/CSU, it has a cable connector that goes to the ethernet hub Daniel O'Leary: The one I set up at my ISP's was a 2er, and had 30 ports... Daniel O'Leary: The WAN port was a serial port to CSU/DSU, and 30 RS-232 ports. Daniel O'Leary: there were three cards - 10 RS-232 on each. Bob Wright: <> Daniel O'Leary: Rusty: Still no luck with downloading TFS v5.6.1.sea... Daniel O'Leary: Are you still uploading it? Bob Wright: greetings to all. Daniel O'Leary: Hi Bob! Donald McHose: Hi Bob! Rusty Tucker: yep still uploading, only 30% complete Bob Wright: Will TF for Windows run under NT? (ie. is it 32 bit?) Rusty Tucker: 1h 33m remaining :) Rusty Tucker: yes it runs under 3.1/95/NT Daniel O'Leary: Minor nit on this chat window - User list is truncated rather than wrapped. Rusty Tucker: but it is 16 bit Bob Wright: oh, I thought NT only ran 32 bit programs? Rusty Tucker: it is supposed to be... since there is no where to wrap to Rusty Tucker: You can use "list of users in this room" to see the full list Daniel O'Leary: Yes, or just resize the window... Daniel O'Leary: I love a big tube. Bob Nunn: I run it on our NT server. I guess a half way decently written 16 bit works okay on NT. Bob Wright: Bob N: hahaha...somehow I should have known that you had already tried it ;) Rusty Tucker: yep - that's the beauty of windows, even runs most DOS apps :) Bob Wright: I just finished setting up a NT network in my house and I want to be able to run TF Client on the network :) Daniel O'Leary: You have my condolences, BW... Rusty Tucker: NT is all 32 bit code, where 95 still has 16 bit code in it Bob Wright: Of course, I will always look for my mac to do MOST of my online sessions :-) Daniel O'Leary: I have set up a Unix network here. Bob Wright: DO'L: well, thanks...I also have LINUX set-up...I am just tinkering :) Daniel O'Leary: it works great with my Macs. Bob Wright: but I was unsure how to set-up DHCP with LINUX....NT seems SO EASY :) Rusty Tucker: No takers on that Be Box?? Daniel O'Leary: I may consider that also rusty... Daniel O'Leary: Do you have a target price? Rusty Tucker: $800 would be great Daniel O'Leary: and a copy of multi-cpu TF server to run on it??? (grinning and ducking) Bob Nunn: Have dancing directory problems with our graphic files also doesn't report free space proper. Can directly send up files from NT server, strips off resources Daniel O'Leary: NT is not production reliable.... Daniel O'Leary: We have it at Lockheed, and it is terrible. Daniel O'Leary: By the way Rusty, that orphaned msg problem is real. I have had it here for ages. Rusty Tucker: any news info from MacWorld? Bob Nunn: Our image database is on it. 27 gig. Works okay within those problems I mentioned. 4k block sizes. Daniel O'Leary: It afflicts MK and Usenet gateways. Have not seen it in TFNet or local. Bob Wright: 4k nodes? Rusty Tucker: hmm Bob Wright: Rusty: just to brag for you -- the school system was shutdown for 17 days, but I left TF running. It did not crash one time :-) Rusty Tucker: cool! Rusty Tucker: TF was good to me this Christmas too, no problems at all Daniel O'Leary: My system didn't crash either...but ServerStat hosed me. Rusty Tucker: that's very nice since the server is remote for a while Bob Wright: I had one small problem: I had a user who had hung up but the system did not release them. They could not log on most of the holidays. Daniel O'Leary: After killing Server stat and switching to Analog, things look better. Bob Wright: is there ANY WAY to disconnect a user REMOTELY? Daniel O'Leary: Yes Bob.3 Rusty Tucker: He probably locked up your modem Bob Wright: no, the modem was ok Daniel O'Leary: There is an Apple Event interface to disconnect the user. Donald McHose: Sure would like to see if Mac-W announces a new G-3 server that Rumors suggested. Our TF never missed a beat either. Rusty Tucker: You need a remote power strip to reset the modems Daniel O'Leary: I am still working on stuff to do this. Rusty Tucker: what did you do to reset the node then? mikael fredriksson: My system was online from Dec. 15 until Jan 4 when I had to restart after a software update Rusty Tucker: here we go Rusty Tucker: In today's keynote presentation, Steve Jobs highlighted QuickTime 3.0, MS Office 98, Oracle enterprise applications, Riven and other software. He then announced that Apple quarterly profits will be $45 million on revenue of $1.575 billion, helped by cost-cutting and by sales of 133,000 G3 Macs. (1Q97 revenue was $2.1 billion, but Apple posted a $120 million loss during that quarter.) The stock price is climbing. Apple also announced Mac OS 8.1, as well as new Ethernet, storage and video card options for G3 Power Macs. QuickTime 3.0 will offer streaming audio and video, using technology from QDesign and Sorenson Video. (Other Apple press releases should be available soon.) Rusty Tucker: from MacIntouch Rusty Tucker: Profit news is very good! Daniel O'Leary: Yes! Bob Nunn: Also Claris is taking orders on 8.1 if you want to get yours in early. mikael fredriksson: That was what we needed! Daniel O'Leary: Is it the same cost as 8.0? Bob Nunn: Mine is $21 and change delivered with proof of OS8. Bob Nunn: I think it lists for $15. Donald McHose: How did you prove it Bob? Rusty Tucker: Bob Nunn: My order confirmation number from OS8 Donald McHose: Thanx Bob Nunn: They have a database with your name and zip code. Daniel O'Leary: Cool. Rusty Tucker: System Requirements, Pricing and Availability Mac OS 8.1 runs on all Power PC and 68040 processor-based Macintosh computers with at least 16MB of RAM. Mac OS 8.1 will be available in the U.S. and Canada in February, and Mac OS 8 customers may download the Mac OS 8.1 update free of charge from Apple's website or get a full install CD of Mac OS 8.1 for $19.95 (details on http://www.apple.com). Mac OS 8.1 will be pre-loaded on new Macintosh computers beginning in mid February. Localized versions of Mac OS 8.1 are scheduled to be available in April. Daniel O'Leary: I wonder why it takes them so long to break it into the preload cycle. Rusty Tucker: the drives are probably loaded at Seagate or whoever Daniel O'Leary: Rusty, who did you say had success with scripting the servers? Daniel O'Leary: I need to speak to them... Rusty Tucker: Stephen Tallent Daniel O'Leary: I was also thinking about creating a utility that would automatically set up folders and files in a user's folder when they register. Rusty Tucker: right, I'm thinking about making an Apple Event interface when a new user is created Ken Sutherland: <> Rusty Tucker: hey Ken Rusty Tucker: Congrats on the notice in MacIntouch for HDS Mail Ken Sutherland: fu***ng ppp Daniel O'Leary: The sysop could create a master version of the setup, and this would be copied right into their mailbox upon this event. The other part would take info to tailor the installed version to the user's name. Ken Sutherland: took me 32 emails to get it Bob Nunn: default homepage and profile. Auto installed Daniel O'Leary: Perseverance Ken... Good show! Donald McHose: Hey Jim, did you get this storm yet,we finally got through it a few minutes ago. Ken Sutherland: happy nerw year to all Rusty Tucker: daryl is planning on setting up a Free Email service based on it. Bob Nunn: happy nerw year to you. Ken Sutherland: what have i missed Donald McHose: and to you Ken/Bob Jim Smith: DMc: No, just rain. Rusty Tucker: Dan O has reported a bug in the #set command, and I've confirmed. It does not listen to #if/#endif Daniel O'Leary: Rusty, when you add the AE, let me know so I can try it out on the work I have already done. Rusty Tucker: I'll fix that in 5.6.2 along with the TCP-IP PPP Support Daniel O'Leary: Question... Ken Sutherland: rusty, anyone else reported Pop3 problems with Claris Emailer2, ie from mail address shortened Rusty Tucker: nope Ken Sutherland: bummer Daniel O'Leary: The behavior I see may be useful... IE two types of vars, one that persists, and one transient. Daniel O'Leary: maybe add a #clear var=" " command? Rusty Tucker: is it your own address or someone elses that gets shortened? Daniel O'Leary: to do this... Rusty Tucker: Just use #set the var to "" Daniel O'Leary: was thinking more along the lines of local versus global vars... Rusty Tucker: Ken Please send me the actual POP3 file ( put in a sit file before attaching ) Ken Sutherland: any sent address, ie user 'joe smith' sends me email and the from address is changed to joesmith so if i reply i get a postmaster error Bob Wright: ok, I was on the phone so did someone say how to disconnect a user remotely? Ken Sutherland: use a gun Daniel O'Leary: that way included vars don't get tangled up between spml pages. Bob Wright: KS: haha Daniel O'Leary: more like an "#export var="" Rusty Tucker: you lost me DO Daniel O'Leary: That way the var persists between pages/loops. Daniel O'Leary: I might have different spml that refers to the same var. Daniel O'Leary: I don't always want global vars. Rusty Tucker: It's a little tricky due to Multihoming and personal web sites Ken Sutherland: anyone else got the modem 336 connect prob i asked about a few weeks ago, rusty any chance of a fix Daniel O'Leary: If I "#export var=" then var takes on that value for all subsequent spml. Rusty Tucker: the most useful would be per user globals, Daniel O'Leary: If I don't then it is on the page. Daniel O'Leary: Agreed. Bob Nunn: If you mean it reports 28.8 even if they connect at higher rates? Rusty Tucker: a lot of globals can be supported by #include Rusty Tucker: you just can set them from SPML Ken Sutherland: nope connect speed unknown Daniel O'Leary: Was looking at a way to make sure they do not tangle each other up. Rusty Tucker: what tangle each other up? Daniel O'Leary: a user's use of var could screw up a root server's use of it. Rusty Tucker: right, that's the tricky part Daniel O'Leary: User page versus page in root folder. Kevin Shearon: <> Daniel O'Leary: Concept of variable scope crystallizes in my foggy head.3 Daniel O'Leary: Wish I were a programmer. Bob Nunn: Gives me an ice cream headache. Daniel O'Leary: Only way I know around it is to "tag" the var with some info about where it came from. Daniel O'Leary: and use that as the real var name. Jim Smith: Dan: Zap you are now a Programmer[) Daniel O'Leary: haha. Ken Sutherland: have u looked at OAT, do you plan to run it, anyone else who does could benefit from mail compression for starters Daniel O'Leary: Sorry to think out loud like that... mikael fredriksson: Ken: I got my HDS to work again I had made a typo in my serial number when I mailed you the reg info on the paid version (now fixed by Jonathan) Daniel O'Leary: I am sure I have Rusty scratching his head now. Ken Sutherland: hamster power Ken Sutherland: tut tut, we are looking into changing the keycode for this very reason Donald McHose: I was thinking along the same lines...hmmm if I knew how to do this stuff.. Ken Sutherland: spend 120 Dollars and buy the CodeWarrior starter pack, u get c,c++,Pascal and Java Ken Sutherland: then upgrade to full CodeWarrior and save on the full price Daniel O'Leary: Another way might be to add a "scope=" tag to it, where tag can be page, dir, or global. Donald McHose: KS:Does that include a logic plug-in for the head ? Rusty Tucker: no, it needs to be based on the root of the page being served Daniel O'Leary: page means the var disappears after the code is run - good for loop counters. Daniel O'Leary: dir is what you would refer to rusty... Ken Sutherland: rusty is a dir? Rusty Tucker: like the user has a root, virtual sites have a root, and dir mapped URL's each have unique roots for the pages Rusty Tucker: that's the scope I'd use for a global variable, it would exist only within one of those roots Daniel O'Leary: At least two kinds are needed though. Rusty Tucker: NetCloak does it differently Rusty Tucker: Variables are completely global, and can only be set thru the NetCloak UI. Rusty Tucker: not from a command in a page Bob Wright: better yet, go out and spend 18.00 for Linux and install all of the C and C++ programs :) Rusty Tucker: But then its designed for a single sited server.... Rusty Tucker: I've also got a 66 mhz 486 with Linux installed for sale.. Bob Nunn: Is there a practical limit on how many sites can be served other than bandwidth? Daniel O'Leary: Completely global vars are "scary"!!! Bob Wright: RT: how much? which Linux? Rusty Tucker: No limit Bob mikael fredriksson: RT: make a list of what you have and asking prices Rusty Tucker: very cheap, make an offer! Bob Wright: red hat? slackware? walnut creek? Rusty Tucker: Its slackware Bob Wright: 3.4? Rusty Tucker: I'd have to look that up Bob Wright: 300.00 :) Donald McHose: DL: just having the ability to erase everything with dollars $ with one quick return ..wonder why banks use it.. Rusty Tucker: I know it was a big pain in the ass to get working until I got the right ENET card for it! Ken Sutherland: got to go, have fun , bye Bob Wright: yeah, I had the same problem...had to go out and get a E2000 card Rusty Tucker: 300 sounds good to me - exactly the one I got ! :) Daniel O'Leary: How much for your router and the BeBox???? Daniel O'Leary: Will have to ask the wife if I can scarf it up. Rusty Tucker: I need to see which router I need, the BB seems to be going for around $800 street price Daniel O'Leary: Be sure to throw in any Be Dev stuff you have to spare also. Rusty Tucker: + shipping of course Daniel O'Leary: Ken wants to know why you have not installed OAT? Bob Wright: yep...that's prob 50.00 Daniel O'Leary: It is working very well for me here. Donald McHose: Gots ta run too. The kids are baaack,ya'll be good. Donald McHose: <> Rusty Tucker: I need to find a box for it. UPS ground is pretty cheap, Airborne 2 day is a little more and much more reliable Bob Wright: Hard Drive size? ram? Daniel O'Leary: Same question on the BeBox... Rusty Tucker: I think Its a 1G HD 16 Meg ram, I'll check on that and make a list Rusty Tucker: the BB is 2 G and 32 Mb I think Bob Wright: sounds good...make a list for Friday :) Rusty Tucker: + ENET and a nice video card Ken Sutherland: <> Bob Wright: sounds like a steal at 300.00 :-) Rusty Tucker: I wish I had room for all that stuff! Daniel O'Leary: I have 4 Unix workstations already... Rusty Tucker: 49 minutes to go for 5.6.1 on the upload Bob Wright: I have a Powerbook, a P166, 2 486's, 1 386, and a Mac SE at my house :) Daniel O'Leary: Wanna horse-trade??? (grin) Bob Wright: I upgraded the Mac SE to a 68030 :) Rusty Tucker: I just don't need the OAT features.. Rusty Tucker: + the server is remote right now. Daniel O'Leary: The online help is pretty cool, as is the file search stuff. Bob Wright: I never did see how to disconnect users Remotely Rusty Tucker: there is an Apple Event for that Rusty Tucker: But Its not likely that;s the problem Rusty Tucker: how do you reset the node when you got back to school? Daniel O'Leary: Bob, there is an apple event to do it... I'm working on an Applescript to do per-node operations, but I have not yet learned how to make it work. Bob Wright: I choose the hung node, select disconnect user and then stop node and then restart Rusty Tucker: do you still have the activity log that shows it? Bob Wright: but I want to do this REMOTELY :) Rusty Tucker: you didn't need to touch the modem at all? Rusty Tucker: ntach Rusty Tucker: -- natch Daniel O'Leary: <> Bob Wright: sure, I have the log somewhere...I guess it would be in the folder which has the node log files Daniel O'Leary: <> Daniel O'Leary: my time was up. Rusty Tucker: send it to me if you can find it, OK? Bob Wright: no, I did not have to reset the modem, but I did it anyway just for good measure Daniel O'Leary: The same could be done with... Bob Wright: ok, the log would be for the hung node right? Rusty Tucker: right Daniel O'Leary: disconnect user hungnodename Daniel O'Leary: Go offline hungnodename Go online hungnodename. Bob Wright: wait Bob Wright: I have my log files rewritten everyday...so mikael fredriksson: want listen to SJ keynote in RealAudio? http://www.news.com/Radio/Rams/1998/01/06/mw01.ram Bob Wright: do you want the log from when I reset it, or from when it crashed? Rusty Tucker: ok, it should be there then. Rusty Tucker: Both should be in the same log Bob Wright: how can both be in the same log if it writes a new log everyday? Rusty Tucker: the log is "rolled" when the node is reset Bob Wright: well, let me get the one from Monday then because that is when I reset the node and got the user unhung Daniel O'Leary: The stuff I typed above should be in a 'Tell application "Telefinder» Server"' applescript. Daniel O'Leary: but I cannot get the nodename right for some reason. Rusty Tucker: Usually the node gets hung only because the modem won't let TF talk to it. Bob Nunn: <> Rusty Tucker: If you disconnect, then use Command Period to cancel TF ignores the modem Rusty Tucker: If you reset the modem, that fixes the modem. Bob Wright: RT: the log file only shows where I stopped it and restarted it Bob Wright: but this users was using the TF for Windows... so command period is not possible Rusty Tucker: Get the one from the day before Rusty Tucker: When the user Hangs Up, that;s the same as Disconnect User. Rusty Tucker: Esc == Command Period on windows Daniel O'Leary: What about sending a modem escape sequence down the line, followed by a modem reset command? Rusty Tucker: TeleFinder does that when it performs the hangup Daniel O'Leary: does it look for a status first? Bob Wright: RT: i restarted the log on 1-5-98...the last record before that is 12-23-87..I am assuming that is when the node got hung, right? Rusty Tucker: yep Daniel O'Leary: Yep to which question? Rusty Tucker: BW's Bob Wright: hey Rusty Tucker: paste in the last several lines from that log Bob Wright: the log shows the user logging on and off....so it reports a disconnect Daniel O'Leary: OK. does TF look for a serial port status before disconnection? Bob Wright: its on my mac and I am on the IBM... mikael fredriksson: <> Jim Smith: <> Rusty Tucker: That's' OK, did you open it online? Bob Wright: hold on, I am sending it... Rusty Tucker: Do, there's not much to look at since the Mac is very limited on RS232 pins Daniel O'Leary: Was thinking that TF might be waiting for a signal that it will never get. therefore, the best way is to wait, send the esc seq, wait then send the hangup string. Bob Wright: I sent it to Bob_Wright@spiderisland.com Bob Wright: I am an idiot Daniel O'Leary: ??? Bob Wright: I sent the file as an attachment :-/ Bob Wright: cant open it up on this STUPID IBM machine Daniel O'Leary: Rusty, I am having trouble getting alternate SPML templates to be recognized by my server. Bob Wright: 12/24/97 9:52:55 AM - Connection made at 19200 bps. 12/24/97 9:52:59 AM - User name: amlewis 12/24/97 9:53:01 AM - Last connection: 12/23/97 9:38:32 AM 12/24/97 9:53:01 AM - User has Windows client software Internal Version Reference: (18). Bob Wright: helloooooooooo? Daniel O'Leary: I am still here. Daniel O'Leary: Wonder about that reset and that cancel... Bob Wright: the canceled post? Daniel O'Leary: the bottom looks like a file xfer.... Daniel O'Leary: and yes I am wondering about the canceled post. Bob Wright: well, the user logged off but TF reported the user was still on...and I have a Max limit of 75 minutes a day for all users,. and TF never disconnected this user Bob Wright: and I don't have allow concurrent logins set for users, so this user could not longer access TF :-/ Daniel O'Leary: looks like the problem happened in mid post somewhere. I might be wrong though. Bob Nunn: <> Bob Wright: RT: are you checking on that? Bob Wright: DO'L: yeah, I don't know why the post was canceled Bob Wright: I guess RT is gone? Daniel O'Leary: He's still here, but I'll bet he's away from the tube. Bob Nunn: He may be otherwise tied up. My time ran out while I was otherwise occupied. Daniel O'Leary: That happened to me earlier. Daniel O'Leary: I found an SPML Bug and rusty confirmed it. Bob Nunn: I have my ISDN up now. Probably read my post. new Ip address 206.30.217.170 Daniel O'Leary: It deals with variables... Bob Wright: I am manually adding users to TF while I chat with you guys :) Bob Wright: CONGRATS Bob!!!!!!!!!!!! :-) Daniel O'Leary: And conditional loops... Bob Nunn: Dan you ought to see those newsgroups fly now. Daniel O'Leary: I have a 100% SPML random midi player online my system. Bob Wright: its sweet on ISDN, ain't it? :) Daniel O'Leary: I will get there when I can... Bob Nunn: I may go back and add more titles and depth just for the heck of it. Bob Wright: BN: how often do you check for news now that you have ISDN? I check three times a day Daniel O'Leary: I do not have the support you guys do. Daniel O'Leary: I check for news constantly. Bob Wright: what support do you think I have, Dan? :) Daniel O'Leary: More than I do, just supposing... Daniel O'Leary: My user-base has been very lapse in helping me out. Bob Wright: I was just wondering what you meant by support...dollars?? people? what? :0 Daniel O'Leary: And I do not run this as part of a business. Daniel O'Leary: All of the above Bob. Daniel O'Leary: My show is a one-man operation. Bob Nunn: I ll have to stop by and visit your site again. It has been a few weeks. Never messed with the music much. Bob Nunn: Does the new sea of 5.6.1 already contain the user mgr or do I get that separate? Bob Wright: Dan: I charge all users 3.00 a year for access...the school system decides how to spend the money. So I don't have dollar support, either Bob Wright: this month's issue of MacWorld has a great article for adding music to a homepage :) Jim Leary: So does last months PC World. Ha Ha Bob Wright: I have over 2,500 in the TF budget, but I can not convince the powers-that-be that I need more than four phone lines...they just don't get it Daniel O'Leary: Haha, Jim, but mine works. Bob Wright: that's 2,500.00 (US) dollars Bob Wright: Dan: hahaha Daniel O'Leary: And Jim, the code is ALL my work. Bob Wright: <> Bob Nunn: My system is a bit flaky or you guys chat too fast. Need to run. Do you know if the 5.6.1 has anything that I really need. I have kept up with all of the betas. Bob Wright: <> Jim Leary2: <> Daniel O'Leary: Not a speck of Microsloth Back Page anywhere. Jim Leary2: was cut off and frozen by the wonderful world of Mac. Had to reboot Jim Leary: <> Bob Wright: that makes two times today I have got "The connection has been lost" from Tf Daniel O'Leary: No need to reboot... I stayed here the whole time. Bob Nunn: am I still working? Daniel O'Leary: Yes. Bob Nunn: Does anyone know what is in the new 5.6.1 archive? Daniel O'Leary: My system looked like it was lost, but it was not. Daniel O'Leary: I just left it alone and it came back on its own just now. Bob Wright: mine disconnected itself from SI Bob Nunn: So it was your fault. Jim Leary2: Anyway, as I was saying Dan...as much as I appreciate all the help, Cinderella turns into a pumpkin Thursday at midnight. If I don't have previews by then with the partitions, I'll have to go with the space wasting single HD setup Daniel O'Leary: By the way Jim, my Mac did successfully route my Unix stuff. Jim Leary2: The boss wants it up Friday afternoon Bob Wright: Dan: what are you routing with your mac? Daniel O'Leary: even while the TF client appeared to freeze. Jim Leary2: The All-Star game and Olympics are too close to waste anymore time Daniel O'Leary: lesson: don't reboot too fast. Jim Leary2: Better wasted space WITH a BBS and previews, than saving space without Daniel O'Leary: For now Bob, VIG. Daniel O'Leary: I want to get rid of it though. Bob Wright: I have VIG...very nice....but I like MachTen better Daniel O'Leary: Can you run TF server under MachTen? Jim Leary2: I'll look for you tonight after the hockey game on your site or tomorrow from work Daniel O'Leary: Ok.. Bob Wright: DO'L: yes, when I first started with TF, I was running MachTen and TF on the same machine....BUT Bob Nunn: Gotta run guys, does anyone know what is in that new 5.6.1 archive Rusty put up? Bob Wright: for some reason the HTTP server of TF would crash MachTen.... Bob Wright: BN: I did not see him say Daniel O'Leary: Bob.. it is not up yet. Bob Nunn: Oh well will download it later then. Okay thank Dan. Bye Bob Nunn: <> Daniel O'Leary: I have been trying to grab it for hours... RT is still putting it online. Daniel O'Leary: Rusty, are you there yet? Daniel O'Leary: BW do you link to any other TF systems for educational stuff? Daniel O'Leary: I am trying to start some edu-support activity on my system. Bob Wright: DO'L: every TF system I met via SI has fallen through: the come across as interested, but never do anything.. :-/ Daniel O'Leary: my wife is a teacher, and I still have a link to Ted Brindle's system. Bob Wright: I will be glad to work with you on some edu stuff :-) Daniel O'Leary: You have not given me a shot. Daniel O'Leary: my system has been up since 1992... Bob Wright: well, where are you and what school system? this system has been up since 1994 :) Daniel O'Leary: And I *DO* things... Daniel O'Leary: grin.. Bob Wright: that's what I want to hear : Daniel O'Leary: My system is in Fort Worth, TX. Jim Leary2: <> Bob Wright: I met this one guy from up north who was having problems setting up his mail server...I helped him and had hoped we would join our school systems together, but he stopped contacting me Daniel O'Leary: I have created some TFNet links to my educational areas. Daniel O'Leary: Was that Ted Brindle in Mich? Bob Wright: well, let's see if we can do something......we do chats with elementary kids every T and Fri from 2:00 - 3:00 EST Bob Wright: the name does not sound familiar, but I think he was in Michigan Daniel O'Leary: My system has no affiliation with any schools here... would like to get something going though. Bob Wright: he did not know how to get his mail server to work for him Daniel O'Leary: I would bet that it is Ted, Bob Wright: this was almost two years ago Daniel O'Leary: I got his going, and then he made some changes that broke it. Daniel O'Leary: He's now big into web pages for his kids. Bob Wright: he kept thinking that he was his own ISP...i kept telling him that he was only his own SMTP server :) Daniel O'Leary: Hehe... Bob Wright: having a class C license does not make you an ISP :) ...not instantly, I mean Daniel O'Leary: Sounds about right... You need quite a bit more than that to really do it. Bob Wright: well, send me email and we can try something...I can be reached at rwright@pps.k12.va.us Bob Wright: its time for me to head out and go home and play with my NT network :) Daniel O'Leary: I am pulling in all of the k12 groups here... ------------------------------------------------------------------ January 6, 1998 -- ©Copyright 1998, Spider Island Software
