Jim Smith: What programs are used? Bob Nunn: Just mail server. If your ISP sets up for you it won't take any additional. Bob Nunn: At the office here we use our NT boxes mail server to route our internal mail and to our TF-BBS. Bob Nunn: Unfortunately TF's mail server is not really a full blown mail server so I guess you are looking for a real mail server program? Bob Nunn: Most browsers are set to use 4 at a time you would theoretically add one more user. Probably a meg would do it (maybe less I forget the formula). Bob Nunn: Seem to remember 128k per thread. So 1/2 meg should do. Bill Gram-Reefer: I already have it set at 8 Mb....just a wild guess...anyone know the formula? Bill Gram-Reefer: So what is a thread...is it the number of TCP nodes? Bob Nunn: Nope kinda like a channel. Ken Sutherland: an info stream Bill Gram-Reefer: where in TF server menus do you add web threads as opposed to TCP nodes? Bob Nunn: I run 18 on mine and have never topped out using it. I think I am running 9 meg on mine and have the cache set up healthy. Just 64k but with the ascend to ascend box compression or whatever. Jim DeHaven: Nynex/bell Atlantic have nothing comparable Ken Sutherland: my 64k will cost $600/month Jim DeHaven: It is so awful living in buffalo Bill Gram-Reefer: Bell Atlantic is being rather pissy about the whole thing Jim DeHaven: we have the sabres but lousy Internet access Bob Nunn: I guess I should be really happy with my $30 Line Charge and $125 ISP charge. Ken Sutherland: yup Jim DeHaven: well I am happy with my modem type provider--they are cool 50 bucks per month Jim DeHaven: I was complaining about the lack of speedier alternatives Ken Sutherland: Jim, get 2 modem lines and a router,get double speed Jim DeHaven: with a 56k modem 50 bucks per month is great especially considering what a dedicated 56k line cost a few months back Jim DeHaven: really??? you can do that??? Bill Gram-Reefer: reverse multiplexing, I think its called Bill Gram-Reefer: the box aggregates the two connections into one somehow Jim DeHaven: I need 2 IP numbers assigned to the same domain names? Bob Nunn: Going out, I couldn't ever figure how to get one IP address using multi coming in though. Ken Sutherland: ask Rusty, I know you can have a few TCP streams running using multiplexing Bill Gram-Reefer: Maybe some adjustment on the ISP side to the MX-10 transfer table that routes IP addressing for your site? Ken Sutherland: 2 modem lines should get you 56k in speed Bill Gram-Reefer: KS $600 per month...yikes Jim DeHaven: this sounds really interesting--I will definitely talk to him--the 7/24 modem lines are cheap Ken Sutherland: set up 1 to send and other to collect Bob Nunn: My ISP couldn't figure out how to do it even if I had bought the gear. Bob Nunn: Talked with the Web Ramp people and they weren't much help either. Jim DeHaven: bob have you talked at all to the biapchat people? Bob Nunn: Not yet, I didn't install the later version yet. Every time I do they come out with a later beta. Bill Gram-Reefer: It appears that, at least out here in Northern California, companies like COVAD and CONCENTRIC make the deal with the phone companies (PacBell) then work with ISPs in the area to offer complete service, installation, etc. Bill Gram-Reefer: So there are just one or two companies co-locating equipment at the telco central Offices and reselling that connection to ISPs Jim DeHaven: yes--they are popping the betas out pretty fast Bob Nunn: Sorry to keep ducking in and out. My connection is flaky. Jim DeHaven: you get into almost all the protected realms with what I gave you on mine Jim DeHaven: also ken Jim DeHaven: I noticed that if you have cookies turned off Jim DeHaven: with HDS mailer Ken Sutherland: it wont work Ken Sutherland: 8-) Jim DeHaven: you get in but then when you click on a piece of mail you get the generic invalid user message Jim DeHaven: I understand this Jim DeHaven: but with the AOL browser Jim DeHaven: including version 4 for the PC you get the same behavior even though you are ostensibly accepting cookies Jim DeHaven: this is only on the PC--the Mac version 4 browser works fine Ken Sutherland: hmm, servers them right Ken Sutherland: A: BillGatus says the signs point to yes and you will be assimilated ! Jim DeHaven: I have had reports of people having the same problem with the generic MSIE version 4 Ken Sutherland: 50 Jim DeHaven: on the PC Jim DeHaven: but I don't know if they had turned cookies off or not so I am not sure if this is a problem Ken Sutherland: i.e. on the PC is very unfriendly with HDS web Bob Nunn: Have had a bit of fun with it.
