---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Text of TeleFinder Chat from Friday, May 22, 1998 11 AM PDT. In attendance: From SpiderIsland: Rusty Tucker Sysops: Jim Smith, Donald McHose, Jim Leary, Bob Nunn, Bob Wright ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rusty Tucker hola! Rusty Tucker Hi Jim Jim Smith : Hi Rusty Rusty Tucker I think the crowd will be small today because of the long weekend Rusty Tucker BTW- are you still working on Popsicle? Jim Smith : You may be correct, I forget those things :) Jim Smith : Yes, I am using it to get and dist. mail list for BBS. Jim Smith : Like MacWay and Tidbit Rusty Tucker Oh? how does that work? Jim Smith : I do not have a domain name so I am not on the Internet only use as a normal ISP' s user account. Jim Smith : However the BBS has an account, Mac Club, and I subscribe to some list. Donald McHose joined the chat. Rusty Tucker Welcome to the chat Donald! Jim Smith : I user Popcicle to get the mail and distribute to folders via text-file-table. Rusty Tucker Hi Don! Donald McHose : ImadeitImadeitImadeit !!! Donald McHose : hey all and you too Rusty Rusty Tucker I though Pops just DL'd POP3 mail and let Mail Server Dist it. You must have added something new I didn't know about. Jim Smith : I did. As I do not have a domain I was not able to use it that way. Jim Smith : I should still work that method, will have to get Mike to check it. Jim Smith : I = It Donald McHose : Jim can't you get a served domain from the State? Rusty Tucker Ahh, I think I see. That's interesting, then its almost a listserv now? Rusty Tucker Using filtering rules to distribute the messages to one or more lists? Jim Leary joined the chat. Rusty Tucker Welcome to the chat Jim! Jim Smith : How would I do that? Donald McHose : I'll get a note off to ya in SI maybe we can work something out. Donald McHose : After the Chat session. Jim Smith : Thanks. Jim Leary : Hey Rusty, early testing yields very good results with the Cumulus/TF relationship. It will take a bit more time, but we are definitely seeing lots of light at the end of the tunnel Rusty Tucker Jim, how do you update the "text-file-table." now? Rusty Tucker Good to hear JL. Jim Leary : BTW, happy to say...there is no longer any more talk around here of a non-TF environment Jim Smith : Can be done in text editor or/preferred: program dialog. Rusty Tucker I C -- have the Popsicle update it in response to email, and you've got yourself a listserv:) Jim Leary : You see RT, I was the TF supporter all along Jim Leary : still hoping you get to NY in July Jim Leary : somehow Rusty Tucker sounds fun??? :) Jim Smith : No, if unknown(no match on keywords) goes to default folder. Jim Smith : Kind of like filters in email programs. Rusty Tucker You reroute to folders, not email addresses? Jim Smith : Yes. Rusty Tucker Why not rewrite the message with a new email address, and let Mail Server route it? Rusty Tucker That would eliminate some potential setup problems, and let you serve non-local addresses as well. Jim Smith : I don't know!! Rusty Tucker ;) now you do Rusty Tucker we can chat about it sometime off line it you'd like. Jim Smith : OK, thanks. Rusty Tucker -ann- Rusty Tucker I should have a new set of Beta's tonight. Rusty Tucker Including a 32 bit Windows client ( looking -very- nice ) Rusty Tucker and server updates as well. Donald McHose : K...what's new in the servers..? Rusty Tucker The new Windows client needs the new server for Thumbnails now. Rusty Tucker This eliminates the dependency on QuickTime for Windows. Donald McHose : RT: Gotcha !! Rusty Tucker I'd guess 80% of TeleFinder Users never installed QT, and missed out on the Thumbnails. Jim Smith : Mac user or Windows user? Rusty Tucker Also - it supports LONG file names. Actually, now they need to be shortened going from Win95 to Mac sometimes :) Rusty Tucker Win User Jim. Rusty Tucker The new set also supports eliminating the "Upload Here!" icon. Rusty Tucker So only users in Access Groups with a "New Uploads" path will see a "send" icon. Rusty Tucker All others will need to send to a regular file folder, where they have upload privileges. Rusty Tucker There are many sysops that wanted to eliminate the "Generic Upload" capability for some or all users. Rusty Tucker Did all that make sense to anyone? Donald McHose : Will the send command in the window pull down menu be grayed out for those users who do not have that type of access? Yes it makes sense. Rusty Tucker Yes, DM. Bob Nunn joined the chat. Rusty Tucker Welcome to the chat Bob! Rusty Tucker The other new item is that the Web Server now updates the "last logon" time in User Manager for web access. Rusty Tucker That will keep Suzie from booting "Web Only" users due to non-activity. Jim Leary : RT, just looked over chat after coming back... Rusty Tucker I think that's about it for the new beta set. Still working on the Transfer Log for TeleFinder User. Jim Leary : I had the same problem at home with TFUser for WIN...no thumbnails Jim Leary : and it used QT16 not QT32 Jim Leary : When I installed 32 for other things I lost the previews...got gibberish Rusty Tucker Those problems will be over with v 5.7. Rusty Tucker The 32 bit install probably croaked the 16 bit stuff. Jim Leary : Glad to hear that's over with. New WIN client will do that now without QT? Rusty Tucker Yes JL Jim Leary : when will you have that? Rusty Tucker It will be in the next Beta release, I hope to have it ready tonight. Jim Leary : Do I have to have newest TFS too for it to client to work. Is that what you had said/ Rusty Tucker Yes, exactly. Jim Leary : and that will be in next beta as well correct? Rusty Tucker TeleFinder User for Win won't do thumbnails without the newest TFS Rusty Tucker The set tonight will include TFS TFU-Win, TFU-Mac and UM Jim Leary : great! looking forward to it Rusty Tucker OK -- enough on that Rusty Tucker Is everyone here running the TF Server b16? Bob Nunn : I am Jim Smith : yes Donald McHose : yupper Rusty Tucker thanks- Daryl at Maui is having BIG time probs. Rusty Tucker I don't think its TF.... but need to make sure. Bob Nunn : I may no what it is. The bottom.mail needs correcting. Don't know why all of a sudden. Rusty Tucker Over time, web threads disappear, and the Mail PI is crashing a lot. He seems to believe its related to b15/16 Bob Nunn : Didn't correlate the trouble with the installation. Thought it was an oversight on my part. HDS mail grief I bet?? Rusty Tucker I think that it's just the Mail PI wreaking havoc. Rusty Tucker what's the problem will bottom.mail? Jim Leary : I have 15 running RT and during a 3 or 4 day stretch recently, mail that I knew was supposed to be there had not come in yet. I had to manually retrieve Bob Nunn : It puts the wrong variable into the url line. Jim Leary : is that a part of his problem? Rusty Tucker no, nothing like that JL Bob Nunn : Just have him change the @'s to a ? Jim Leary : It only started happening when I used newest MS Jim Leary : oh, well I'll let you know if it happens again and worry about it then Bob Nunn : I will start checking my web threads but I haven't seen any problem. Donald McHose : Same here ..no problems to speak of with 15 or 16 . We use the mail-PI a lot. Bob Nunn : Hit your address book Donald and see if things get screwy Rusty Tucker which mail-pi version are you using? Bob Nunn : b2 Donald McHose : BN: I'll do it thanx. Bob Nunn : If it is let me know and I send up my fixed bottom mail. Donald McHose : I'll have to check it on another box later .This P550 does not have enough mem. for exploder and TF user ;-) Donald McHose : Not to change the subject but the new Netscape is only 7.5+ compliant for the 68k machines ;) Donald McHose : 4.05 version that is. Bob Nunn : Anyone got big weekend plans? Rusty Tucker Doing a picnic at the beach tomorrow. Donald McHose : I'll have to ask the wife ;-) Careful on the Highway RT. Bob Nunn : Sounds nice, will be getting away first of June. Going to Lake Ouachita in ARK. Crystal clear lake near Hot Springs. May drive in and take a bath. Rusty Tucker must be that time of year ;) Donald McHose : Question on the SMTP node.ya'll...sorry Bob. Bob Nunn : I look forward to the only public bathhouse left in Hot Springs. Run by the Park Department. Rusty Tucker If there's nothing else, I'm back to the coding... Donald McHose : We have 6 POP3 nodes and 6 nodes in the SMTP gateway set up for incoming. But only one Node shows up as a gateway node.Is this normal? Rusty Tucker yes DM. That's the node for a TFNet gateway. Nothing to do with SMPT/POP3 Donald McHose : Thanx..weew ! Bob Wright joined the chat. Rusty Tucker Welcome to the chat Bob! Bob Wright : Greetings! Rusty Tucker Just in time for Good-byes :) Bob Wright : RT: actually I joined real quick to ask you about the bug in TF User Rusty Tucker ok -- what is it? Bob Wright : RT: the bug where if your password is wrong, you have to restart TF User in order to reconnect Bob Wright : I thought you were going to fix that Rusty Tucker right, got that one fixed for this next release. Rusty Tucker missed it on the last one. Bob Wright : ok..just checking :) Rusty Tucker Thanks for the reminder! Bob Nunn : See you all Tues. Please send the logs. Bye Bob Wright : I'll send you my bill ;-) Bob Nunn left the chat. Rusty Tucker c-ya Bob Nunn Bob Wright : RT: when will that version come out? Rusty Tucker ok --- see you all next week. The new stuff should be online this PM. Donald McHose : c-ya later all. Bob Wright : bye bye Donald McHose left the chat. Rusty Tucker c-ya Donald McHose Rusty Tucker I'll post a note to "tf-annouce" when I put it up. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- May 22, 1998 -- ©Copyright 1998, Spider Island Software
