Rusty Tucker DM! Jim Smith joined the chat. Rusty Tucker Welcome to the chat Jim! Jim Smith : Hi Rusty Tucker yo ho Donald McHose : Hello ;-) Rusty Tucker Gary Clarke from Aus. may join us this p.m.... Jim Smith : RT: I got a call, my BBS, from someone in Burnsville MN looking around, about 3 calls Jim Smith : It was Poliac Research Rusty Tucker what's that? Gary Clarke joined the chat. Rusty Tucker Welcome to the chat Gary Clarke! Gary Clarke left the chat. Rusty Tucker c-ya Gary Clarke Donald McHose : RT: Tried my new virtual domain www.southport-maritime.org not to good ;-( Jim Smith : Phone book indicates a System consult Rusty Tucker Cool, sell him a system! :) Rusty Tucker is the domain working yet? Rusty Tucker Gary's faxing me an article about web mail from Time mag. pretty cool Donald McHose : Well I am not sure . It pulls up but instead of homepage it goes /and sends our TCP address Donald McHose : That gives a not found here response from the browser. Gary Clarke joined the chat. Rusty Tucker Welcome to the chat Gary Clarke! Rusty Tucker seems like the URL in the virtual host setup is wrong. Rusty Tucker I get redirected to "http://www.southport-maritime.org/207.232.201.198" Rusty Tucker just put www.southport-maritime.org in the host field Rusty Tucker and /a_folder_name in the URL part Donald McHose : I'll give it a check in the a.m. but I believe that is how it is set up(folder) /Southport Donald McHose : If it is I'll give you a shout after I play Rusty Tucker maybe there is another setting that's conflicting? Rusty Tucker Hi Gary, I got the article! Donald McHose : from the domain server end? Gary Clarke : Good. It's interesting reading. PS. Your fax ID is showing the old number! Rusty Tucker ! Rusty Tucker DM - no, there is another "URL mappings" setting in TF, you don't use those with Virt hosts. Donald McHose : O.K. let me sit down with the manual and then give you a shout if I still can't make sense out of it. Rusty Tucker In Virt hosts, put the "www.southport-maritime.org" in Host domain Donald McHose : Friday Rusty Tucker and "/folder" in location Rusty Tucker I won't be in tomorrow :( Donald McHose : oh. O.K. Gary Clarke : Rusty, is it possible to run a chat session in a browser, is anyone doing this? Donald McHose : I'll be sure to copy this then and thanx Rusty Tucker yep BIAP chat is a Chat Plugin for the web server. Gary Clarke : Thanks, will try it out. Cost? Donald McHose : Warning..BIAP does not do explorer..the rooms do not pull up. Donald McHose : Netscape works well however Donald McHose : Have tried on PC and on Mac Rusty Tucker ? www.biap.com Gary Clarke : Hi Don, do you know why it doesn't work with Explorer? Rusty Tucker comes from Chuck Shotton, the guy who did WebStar/Mac HTTP Rusty Tucker WebStar Donald McHose : I have not pursued it since I gave it a try last month...other things in the fire. Rusty Tucker It's Java, so must be something to do with that. I think that may be fixed? Donald McHose : I still have it running..a beta version and will give chuck a shout about the problem soon Donald McHose : It probably is a Java thing. Donald McHose : Yeah like Rusty says ;-) Gary Clarke : Thanks both Donald McHose : I'll check on it tomorrow Donald McHose : it is fast enough on a slow 601/110 server Donald McHose : about that article you got ...? Donald McHose : what's the jest? Rusty Tucker it about "Web Mail" services.. no mention of Maui Mail tho :) Rusty Tucker Hotmail, Yahoo, Mailcity.... Rusty Tucker They pretty much get it Gary Clarke : We need to get Jonathan (Ken) to improve the mail plugin to keep copies of mail sent and attachment sending! Gary Clarke : Hotmail does this. I've been informed this is running on MS Exchange Servers. Rusty Tucker ha! :) Rusty Tucker Microsoft wishes. Its running on UNIX. Gary Clarke : Thanks Rusty, now we know! Rusty Tucker I'm sure they'll finally get it ported to WinNT, but for now they need UNIX Donald McHose : They ( Jon & Ken ) could do that on a server that was also running OAT probably. Rusty Tucker www.hotmail.com : Rusty Tucker Date: Fri, 17 Jul 1998 01:26:19 GMT Server: Apache/1.2.1 Last-Modified: Sun, 05 Jul 1998 08:17:10 GMT ETag: "ba-1d69-359f3686" Content-Length: 7529 Accept-Ranges: bytes Connection: close Content-Type: text/html Donald McHose : BRB gots to pick up the kid.. Rusty Tucker Even the homepage web server is Apache :) Rusty Tucker Probably a P120 running Linux ... haha Gary Clarke : Rusty you are too quick! Guys, I can't stress enough how much we value browser mail. It enables our journalists, sales people etc. all over the world to check their mail. Simplicity at its best. Just needs the extra features like Hotmail! Rusty Tucker I wish that Jon and Ken were here tonight.... Jim DeHaven joined the chat. Rusty Tucker Welcome to the chat Jim! Rusty Tucker I'll e-mail them a copy of the log Gary Clarke : ME too! Rusty Tucker Web Mail is critical for me while away from the office. Gary Clarke : Thanks Rusty Tucker It means that I can grab my mail from any PC with a browser. Jim DeHaven : provided that it is not running Internet explorer 4.0 Rusty Tucker And I can leave it on the server so that Eudora keeps a copy for me later too. Gary Clarke : Fixed in 1.03b Jim DeHaven : oh--good!!!! Jim DeHaven : that means much time saved explaining the work around Rusty Tucker JD - are you're users up on the 4.0b2 TeleFinder Win client? Jim DeHaven : I am the only one Jim DeHaven : I have not yet distributed it Jim DeHaven : because we are at the end of summer school Rusty Tucker Does it work for you? Rusty Tucker I see Jim DeHaven : and the real crunch will not come until fall Jim DeHaven : so far it does Rusty Tucker It fixes a problem with using AOL's Winsock. Jim DeHaven : which means about a total of 10 hours or so Jim DeHaven : yes it does Jim DeHaven : I was delighted at that Jim DeHaven : every time I don't have to make excuses, using the Mac and your server looks better Rusty Tucker AOL's Winsock is 32 bit only, and since 4.0 is 32 it works now! Yay! Gary Clarke : Rusty, any chance of adding a comment box in Server User Manager for storing info about a person eg. Dept., Magazine they work for etc.? Jim DeHaven : What I don't understand is--why couldn't the AOL people have said that--surely they must have had some idea--oh well Rusty Tucker true Jim DeHaven : here is what I would really like Donald McHose : I have seen no problems either except for the D&D....AOL's Winsock compliance will be a big help I am sure for a # of users Jim DeHaven : I would like the user to be able to chooses their access group when they sign on Jim DeHaven : from a list of access groups that I make available to them Jim DeHaven : in a pop up menu or something Rusty Tucker hmm,.. I'll take ADMIN every time :) Rusty Tucker we could do something in the web sign up to handle that. Jim DeHaven : I am trying to figure out how to automate the registration process Jim DeHaven : for about 300 people Jim DeHaven : that would be wonderful Rusty Tucker tab delimited text Rusty Tucker are they in a data base? Jim DeHaven : no Rusty Tucker do you have the names in a file? Jim DeHaven : because only a subset of our students take the Internet courses Jim DeHaven : no I don't Jim DeHaven : our registrar can't provide this Donald McHose : its a pain...but you can do it with shared access group resources..that is what we have done. Rusty Tucker how were you thinking about automating it? Jim DeHaven : but tell me about the database--because I hope to put a second server online in September Jim DeHaven : by automating it I only meant Gary Clarke : RE: User Manager. When you have a lot of users, you don't always remember where they are from, since you can already store phone numbers, we were hoping you could have a comment (info) box. Is this a big deal to do? Jim DeHaven : to have the students themselves sign on Jim DeHaven : and select the user group they will be in Jim DeHaven : based on the course they are in Rusty Tucker From a DB you can usually export selected fields to a tab delimited text file. The TeleFinder docs tell you what should be where. Jim DeHaven : inn the user manager file? Jim DeHaven : because the plan is to have a second server Rusty Tucker Them you can "Import" the file to create the records in batch Jim DeHaven : students.dyc.edu Rusty Tucker "Second Server" is music to my ears :) Jim DeHaven : which will be the location of the student web pages Jim DeHaven : that is **my** plan Jim DeHaven : it is not the plan of other folks--but of course last year the distance learning server was only my plan Jim DeHaven : so I expect I will get this Rusty Tucker :) - loving it! Jim DeHaven : ditto Donald McHose : A second server would solve that problem all together. They would just sign on using UM PI Jim DeHaven : Donald--the second server has a different purpose Jim DeHaven : it is unrestricted Jim DeHaven : a student commons Jim DeHaven : the first server Jim DeHaven : the one right now Rusty Tucker Have you got any enterprising C++ hackers over there? Jim DeHaven : has to have some measure of security and limited access Jim DeHaven : hah hah hah Jim DeHaven : they think **I** am a hacker Rusty Tucker If so, they could rig up a custom "register" plugin. Donald McHose : I read ya loud-n clear ha ha Jim DeHaven : because I can do stuff like set the margins on a word processing document Rusty Tucker OOPS, that wont' work :) Jim DeHaven : well rusty--the plan is that I learn Java this summer Jim DeHaven : and I already know C pretty well Jim DeHaven : problem is Jim DeHaven : summer is slipping away Jim DeHaven : and I am busy doing atomic porbityals Jim DeHaven : orbitals Rusty Tucker Must be one of them "liberal arts" colleges :) Jim DeHaven : for my Internet chem. course Donald McHose : Love that shell game JD Jim DeHaven : well these are pretty nice drawings Don Jim DeHaven : including some neat QuickTime VR's Jim DeHaven : a benzene ring with extended pi orbitals for example Jim DeHaven : did you all see the demo of the iMac vs. the pentium 400 MHz? Jim DeHaven : presumably you did Donald McHose : NO!! Rusty Tucker cool!. Nope on demo Jim DeHaven : pretty funny Rusty Tucker Kick butt? Jim DeHaven : they did a Macromedia director file Jim DeHaven : kicked butt badly Jim DeHaven : they played a 233 MHz pentium II at the same time Jim DeHaven : absolutely pathetic Rusty Tucker $1200 home PC vs. $5000 workstation. David wins again! Jim DeHaven : I could compress the file and put it in your box if you'd like rusty Jim DeHaven : absolutely Jim DeHaven : the pentium had a 100 MHz memory bus Donald McHose : Hell I would like a copy of that too if possible. Jim DeHaven : and 1/2 meg backside cache Jim DeHaven : I will compress it Jim DeHaven : I expect the compressed version will still be 10 Mb or so Rusty Tucker and a floppy disk drive I'd guess :( Jim DeHaven : good point Jim DeHaven : that is jobs Jim DeHaven : with his mania for style Rusty Tucker maybe even a SCSI port ? :) Jim DeHaven : I remember when he felt the future was in serial hard drives Jim DeHaven : a byte interview I believe Rusty Tucker Well, I said when the thing came out. Its a College Students dream. Jim DeHaven : where he proved that the Mac serial port was plenty fast Jim DeHaven : well--let me tell you Rusty Donald McHose : To be honest I think they are on the right track with USB Jim DeHaven : with an Ethernet network Rusty Tucker If you got 10baseT in your dorm room, you don't' need the rest. Jim DeHaven : it makes sense Jim DeHaven : yes but 12 megabits? Jim DeHaven : that's a max. of 2 megabytes per second give or take Jim DeHaven : not fast enough Rusty Tucker SCSI would be real nice... Rusty Tucker iMac Plus? Donald McHose : For the college student if they could have put in their old T.V. card it would have been great..a true all in one Jim DeHaven : HAH!!!!!!! Jim DeHaven : yes I can see it Jim DeHaven : jobs quits company in about a year in anger Jim DeHaven : and new management comes out with iMacPlus Jim DeHaven : followed by iMacII Jim DeHaven : with PV slots Rusty Tucker :):):):) Jim DeHaven : PC slots Jim DeHaven : the more things change..... Rusty Tucker But, ya know Rusty Tucker they already have G3's with all those goodies. Jim DeHaven : Yes-- I have 4 of them Rusty Tucker just not for 1200 bones Jim DeHaven : hee hee hee Rusty Tucker b*strd Rusty Tucker wish I did :( Jim DeHaven : your font just turned green rusty Rusty Tucker yep Jim DeHaven : I was lucky Donald McHose : keep that stability in your orbitals......The EDU students can get the all-in one machines for home use now. Jim DeHaven : Yes the all in ones are totally functional Jim DeHaven : and totally ugly Jim DeHaven : they look like giant toasters Jim DeHaven : I am sitting at one now Jim DeHaven : I got to specify the Macs that we purchased for the faculty Donald McHose : True...oh God I am gonna ... Jim DeHaven : every faculty has either a G3 or a 7300 Jim DeHaven : with 64 meg ram Jim DeHaven : and a Jaz drive Jim DeHaven : and multisync monitor Rusty Tucker just the thing for WORD Jim DeHaven : and laser printer Jim DeHaven : that is the faculty who chose Macs Jim DeHaven : the PC faculty Donald McHose : % ? Jim DeHaven : some of them got 133 Mhz pentiums Jim DeHaven : about 1/3 Macs Rusty Tucker poor sh*ts Jim DeHaven : well--they had our administrators choose their PC's for them Jim DeHaven : they just went to the last line in the catalog and said Jim DeHaven : "What a bargain" Jim DeHaven : "Lets get those" Jim DeHaven : what boneheads Donald McHose : not bad considering..the % that is. It could be worse. We have 100% PC thanx to our admin. Rusty Tucker Actually, I could take everything I've got and trade em all in on a G3 PowerBook, and have more MIPs Jim DeHaven : ouch Jim DeHaven : that ouch was for don Jim DeHaven : how do you exist in such an environment? Jim DeHaven : (PS I am known as the "squeaky wheel" here) Donald McHose : Yeah well I wear my Mac stuff every time I go to the school. Rusty Tucker Time for me to wrap. Rusty Tucker Any last Q's before I go? Jim DeHaven : yes Donald McHose : and I always let them know what's serving them. Gary Clarke : Thanks Rusty, any answer on user Manager? Rusty Tucker User Manager? Jim DeHaven : do you have 2 or 3 of the most impressive statistics about Telefinder? Jim DeHaven : I need this--like number of hits per day it can take Gary Clarke : Adding a comment field, I'm currently use the callback field for extra info! Jim DeHaven : I need this to impress some administrators and grants people Rusty Tucker GC - nothing for that now. I use the Phone field if necessary Gary Clarke : OK, bye Jim DeHaven : or 2 or 3 major users if possible--something to impress them Rusty Tucker JD - Last I clocked it on a 604/132 was 200 hits per second Rusty Tucker 18000000 per day Jim DeHaven : cool Donald McHose : Catch ya'll later. B-sure to post this if ya get a chance Rusty for info..and thanx. Donald McHose left the chat. Rusty Tucker c-ya Donald McHose Rusty Tucker You could get lots more on a G3 running over a 100 base t Jim Smith : cu Jim Smith left the chat. Rusty Tucker c-ya Jim Smith Jim DeHaven : yes--I have a 100 megahertz card waiting to be installed in my 7300 Jim DeHaven : which will be the dl server for now Jim DeHaven : how about major customers?
