---------------------------------------------------------------------------- TeleFinder Chat from Tuesday, September 22, 1998 11 AM PDT. In attendance: From Spider Island: Rusty Tucker Sysops: Mikael Fredriksson, Ken Sutherland, Jim Leary, Michael Davidson, Daryl Hansen ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rusty Tucker hola! Mikael Fredriksson joined the chat. Rusty Tucker Welcome to the chat mikael! Mikael Fredriksson : Hi! Rusty Tucker nope, no luck resurrecting the drive Rusty Tucker Now I remember why I didn't have the BBS on the back up schedule Mikael Fredriksson : I uploaded the SPML files I had here Rusty Tucker Retrospect 3.0 ws failing to back up local drives, it would only work ( very slowly ) via AppleTalk Rusty Tucker I have 4.1 on order now. so will hopefully get back in sync Mikael Fredriksson : No IP backups? Rusty Tucker 4.1 will do IP, and even FTP Rusty Tucker I am now testing a Macbinary Plug-in, its a replacement for Binhex on web transfers Mikael Fredriksson : Yea I got mail from the Swedish distributor of Retrospect about it Rusty Tucker It is faster, and more flexible too. Mikael Fredriksson : your own plugin ? Rusty Tucker Just add ".bin" to any URL and it will transfer by Macbinary Rusty Tucker yes Rusty Tucker So if you want to download a gif, like www.spiderisland.com.si_gifs/v5welcome.gif Mikael Fredriksson : can it default to .bin Rusty Tucker ask for www.spiderisland.com.si_gifs/v5welcome.gif.bin Rusty Tucker I have also set up a system to disallow certain binary transfers like SPML and so on Mikael Fredriksson : I would like to ba Rusty Tucker try www.spiderisland.com.si_gifs/homepage.spml.bin Mikael Fredriksson : be able to set a Rusty Tucker If it is disallow, the Plug-in redirects you back to the "original" URL Mikael Fredriksson : default on my download sections to .bin for Mac users Rusty Tucker You can also using the "Handlers" config in TeleFinder to automatically choose certain types to BIN Rusty Tucker just like the Handler mapping to binhex is setup now. Mikael Fredriksson : Request Failed Your request could not be processed by the plug-in. Reason: file not found Rusty Tucker which url ? Mikael Fredriksson : www.spiderisland.com.si_gifs/homepage.spml.bin Mikael Fredriksson : I did pickup a / www.spiderisland.com/si_gifs/homepage.spml.bin Rusty Tucker yes, I must have the older version online still Rusty Tucker my mistake Rusty Tucker http://www.spiderisland.com/homepage.spml.bin Mikael Fredriksson : goy Mikael Fredriksson : t Mikael Fredriksson : got your homepage Rusty Tucker It lets you protect files from being DL'd, like DB files, password files etc. Rusty Tucker and the source of your SPML... Mikael Fredriksson : :) Rusty Tucker Its really nice on being SEA's .... cuts over 3MB from the demo DL! Mikael Fredriksson : That's a lot of download time on a 33.6 modem Rusty Tucker yep Ken Sutherland joined the chat. Rusty Tucker Welcome to the chat Ken! Ken Sutherland : greetings Rusty Tucker hey hey Mikael Fredriksson : can you setup different download pages for users that can use .bin and users that need .hqx Rusty Tucker You could do something with the DIR.SPML to offer a download page, and separate links and info from there. Rusty Tucker I should see what's up with Mozilla and see about adding automatic Macbin handling, like MS has Mikael Fredriksson : that it will add .bin to your url? Rusty Tucker You can add it within the SPML , instead of using the FILEHREF tag, just construct your own link Mikael Fredriksson : why not have it giving you 2 options on your download pages .hqx AND .bin in TF's bbs-web interface Rusty Tucker pass the basic location of the file you want to download to a template page, then put the options there. Ken Sutherland : You recently in one of the chat's on spiderisland said that you planned to run web speed test to compare Telefinder to 'webstar3' Apple's IP6.1 and 'Web Ten', are you any further along with this, in the UK there has been a lot of news items stating 'Web Ten' to be the fastest Mac solution, any comments? Mikael Fredriksson : I did some tests here RT has the numbers Rusty Tucker I believe that WebTen MAY be the fastest solution running on Mac Hardware.... Rusty Tucker But its not MacOS...so you might as well use Linux PPC and Apache Rusty Tucker IF speed is all that matters. Michael Davidson joined the chat. Rusty Tucker Welcome to the chat Michael! Jim Leary joined the chat. Rusty Tucker Welcome to the chat Jim! Rusty Tucker Mikael has helped me put up some numbers on TeleFinder relative to Web*, and its looking very good. Michael Davidson : Long time no see you guys Jim Leary : Thanks RT...I'm all set as you can see Rusty Tucker I still need to do some verification on the numbers before we publish them Rusty Tucker good deal Jim Ken Sutherland : bummer Jim Leary : Whew! Thought there for a while that you were finally fed up :) Ken Sutherland : why is WebTen faster, the OS shell? Ken Sutherland : did you test with OS 8.5? Mikael Fredriksson : yes TF was a lot faster than WS 3.01 on 2 * G3 266 on a 100 base T network Mikael Fredriksson : yes 8.1 and 8.5f6 Rusty Tucker Does any one have Bob Nunn's BIG MIME list? Mikael Fredriksson : but we need to that with 8.5 GM Rusty Tucker Web ten comes with the UNIX environment, and its own TCP stack. There in lies the advantage and DIS advantage Mikael Fredriksson : I think that 8.5 will give Mac OS a big increase in TCP/IP speed or RT? Jim Leary left the chat. Rusty Tucker c-ya Jim Leary Rusty Tucker I think so.. but the full benefit won't be realized until we get the UNIX core and preemptive threading in MacOS-X Ken Sutherland : brb 10 mins Daryl Hansen joined the chat. Rusty Tucker Welcome to the chat Daryl! Mikael Fredriksson : the only thing about MacOS-X is that we all have to get G3's... Daryl Hansen : Just uploaded "Keep It Up 2.0" It is amazing! Rusty Tucker thx! Daryl Hansen : Its in "Sysop Files" --> "Utilities" Rusty Tucker MF- that's good too! Daryl Hansen : Ken, any progress planned for the mail plug-in? Mikael Fredriksson : RT one thing about "Sysop Files" on SI I cant move my uploaded files or trash old files anymore. Rusty Tucker Ken's away from kbd Rusty Tucker OK, I need to re-jigger that access levels Rusty Tucker Should I trash that partial file? Mikael Fredriksson : thx Daryl Hansen : RT, sorry to hear about your HD passing away. I was wondering what was going on when I couldn't logon :) Mikael Fredriksson : yes Rusty Tucker Need to get my new version of Retrospect so I can get it back on the backup rotation Daryl Hansen : Rusty, will MacOS X remove the 32,000 limit in UM, when your app is carbonized? Rusty Tucker all in all, its good to clean out the system every once in a while :) Mikael Fredriksson : and in "Public Files" I think that you have to open the folders to get the icons on the right place Rusty Tucker Probably DH, since I'll need to find a replacement for the custom LDEF it uses. List Manager is the limitation. Daryl Hansen : RT,Sounds good, I won't ask what that means :) Rusty Tucker any last q's before we wrap for today? Daryl Hansen : No, thanx?! Make sure you all check out Keep it up 2.0! Daryl Hansen : You WON'T be disappointed Mikael Fredriksson : no, time to get home from work 9 PM here ;) Daryl Hansen : 9:00 am in Maui :) Mikael Fredriksson : and lunch time for RT ;) Rusty Tucker yep Daryl Hansen : RT, did you have the latest Chat logs backed up? Rusty Tucker not me, but maybe Bob N did? Daryl Hansen : k Rusty Tucker ok see you all later Daryl Hansen : later guys Daryl Hansen left the chat.
