---------------------------------------------------------------------------- TeleFinder Chat from Tuesday, December 8, 1998 11 AM PST. In attendance: From Spider Island: Rusty Tucker Sysops: Jim Leary, Mikael Fredriksson, Bob Nunn, Donald McHose, Ken Sutherland ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jim Leary: Hello MF BN...where is the ringmaster of this circus? Mikael Fredriksson: Working on the windows client ? ;) Bob Nunn: Making things more Mac like for those without. Jim Leary: You mean accommodate Windows users for TeleFinder which is Mac-based Jim Leary: If he's smart, RT would make TeleFinder a PC server as well. Then maybe he'd gain some popularity instead of being an unknown Bob Nunn: I suppose he doesn't want to go head to head with a superior solution like BackOffice on NT. Rusty Tucker: late again :( Ê Rusty Tucker: .. but the Windows Client is looking better ! :) Rusty Tucker: Fixed the transfer bug that Jim D found with the "no extensions" setting. Rusty Tucker: and another that affects using different modem ports Rusty Tucker: it also now remembers its the last window size and position for chat, email, topics, address book and so on Rusty Tucker: also the transfer status window now looks like the Mac TF User's Rusty Tucker: Copy and Paste is supported in the Address Book, along with Multiple selections.. Rusty Tucker: a number of cosmetic glitches are fixed Mikael Fredriksson: RT have you downloaded the System 8.51 update from apple? Rusty Tucker: I downloaded it, last nite but didn't install it yet Rusty Tucker: oh, also the quoting now works the same on the windows client as on the Mac version Bob Nunn: Think you will have a beta up soon? Rusty Tucker: As soon as I stop my self from making changes:) Rusty Tucker: Think I may add "chat" logging first Bob Nunn: I guess the 8.51 is not for general public. I don't see it on the software update site?? What's it fix? Rusty Tucker: its on Apple's public FTP Ê Rusty Tucker: fixes the HD problems, mem leaks and so on in 8.5 Rusty Tucker: gotta get it and install it Bob Nunn: Found it. Mikael Fredriksson: Monday, December 7, 1998: The Mac OS 8.5.1 update has arrived; included is Drive Setup 1.6.2, version 1.3.4 of the AppleScript Extension (fixing the memory leak), and Sherlock 2.0.2 (fixing the firewall proxy problems). Earlier versions of Drive Setup could ("extremely rarely") overwrite part of an HFS partition, causing repair utilities to report problems with block 0, or preventing the partition from appearing on the Desktop; further, Drive Setup 1.6.2, unlike some of its predecessors, insures that each volume has all the required patches. [MRP Note: for those having trouble getting the download, the (unofficially) mirrored copy on Pete Handel's page compares exactly to the original.] Ê Mac OS 8.5.1 also addresses a memory error (requiring restart) that could occur when making a large number of asynchronous writes to a volume, and works better (than 8.5) with many third-party devices, such as joysticks. Ê Mikael Fredriksson: Was from the MRP website.. Bob Nunn: Sounds like I need this one. Haven't been having any problems though. Rusty Tucker: You really need it if you want to use the AppleScript extensions with TF Rusty Tucker: The Chat extensions always crash on me after enough time under 8.5 Rusty Tucker: I'm on the PC right now.. so no log form me today Bob Nunn: I set my log up to register so I am okay. Rusty Tucker: cool Rusty Tucker: Looks like Gates will be a "neighbor" soon. coming out to the Palm Springs area to build a Golf mansion. Jim Leary: excuse me...where do I go for 8.5.1 update? Bob Nunn: http://17.126.3.139/cgi-bin/http_lister.pl?Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English-North_American/Macintosh/System/Mac_OS_8.5.1_Update Jim Leary: thank you Jim Leary: I always get confused binhex or binary...which one should I take Bob Nunn: Guess you guys will be hanging in the pro shop. I always get the small one. Bob Nunn: If you have a fairly modern version of Stuffit installed it will handle either. Rusty Tucker: binary == is smallest Jim Leary: thanks...downloading....I did have problems with unexpected reboots and memory problems Bob Nunn: Check for the worm while you are at it. Jim Leary: G3 is awesome Jim Leary: very fast Bob Nunn: Reboots is indicative of the HK worm. Jim Leary: glad I listen to Dan and RT once in a while Rusty Tucker: :) Bob Nunn: Its rampant by the way. Make sure you turn off the autoplay QT settings in the control panel and run worm gobbler every now and then. Rusty Tucker: which control panel is that in? Mikael Fredriksson: QuickTimeª Settings Bob Nunn: The QT control panel. AutoPlay Jim Leary: why should I turn Auto Play off Rusty Tucker: turn both auto plays off, or only CD-ROM autoplay? Bob Nunn: Don't need em on anyway. Worm Virus will reproduce itself all over your network. Jim Leary: where is worm gobbler? Bob Nunn: I turn em all of since you can still use the manual player. It sysop files area on SI. Jim Leary: thanks Rusty Tucker: Hey Ken! Ken Sutherland: merry xmas to all ! Rusty Tucker: happy happy! Donald McHose: Merry Merry ! Jim Leary: worm scanner? is that it? Ken Sutherland: whatever ! Bob Nunn: Worm Gobbler is best and is in the misc. files area. Runs quickly over even large networks Rusty Tucker: bring any gifts? ( like a new HDS Beta ? ) Jim Leary: ok thanks Ken Sutherland: nope, a beta for AutoMan will be out before xmas Rusty Tucker: I need to send some email to Jon soon. I may add some fields to the address book, and I want to make sure that it doesn't break WebMail Ken Sutherland: most appreciated from a 3rd party developer Bob Nunn: Caught me off guard and caused me grief. Come in from a zip disk from our overseas office. Is on my optical media and reappears from time to time. Rusty Tucker: ZIP disks can carry the worm? Mikael Fredriksson: Any disk.... Bob Nunn: Evidently. I am fairly certain it is the source. Rusty Tucker: ohh, I thought only CD's autoplayed. I'll bet that's a common misconception! Donald McHose: Just ask Mac addict ;-) Bob Nunn: Gave it to all of my vendors. We was worm ridden. Yep infected my home system with the Mac Addict CD. Bob Nunn: Nice of them to own up to it. Rusty Tucker: Great, can't even eradicate from CD's... very insidious Rusty Tucker: should be able to find the appl on the disk Ken Sutherland: make a fresh copy Rusty Tucker: CD autoplay must have specific file that gets launched Jim Leary: think I need to get off to allow 8.5.1 to download properly. See all later Bob Nunn: I am waiting for the variants. The worm eradicators all work of the assumption that it is a certain file name. Not hard to change the worm. Rusty Tucker: see ya Rusty Tucker: the cd needs a specifically named file so that the OS knows what to "Auto Play" -- well, probably, I don't know for sure, but that would be the easy way to do it. Rusty Tucker: audio autoplay would start on a specific track Bob Nunn: Now checking: Bubba-iMac Bubba-iMac:DB not found Bubba-iMac:System Folder:Extensions:Desktop Print Spooler not found Bubba-iMac:BD not found Bubba-iMac:System Folder:Extensions:Desktop Printr Spooler not found Bubba-iMac:DELDB not found Bubba-iMac:System Folder:Extensions:DELDesktop Print Spooler not found Rusty Tucker: but, they may have a different system. the main thing is that you can't delete a file off a CD, so you need to disable autoplay in QuickTime Bob Nunn: You can do a option? find file for DELD and if you have it that file shows up. Rusty Tucker: right, let it find Invisible files. Bob Nunn: Our State Technical Institute was plagued with it as well. I really wasn't aware how pervasive it was. Rusty Tucker: What is the file name is puts on your disk? Ken Sutherland: varies Bob Nunn: SAM didn't handle it. I am not sure that NAV does either. Rusty Tucker: does it make an app in the start items, or extensions? Ken Sutherland: print spooler Bob Nunn: That little dump I did has all the filenames it makes. Rusty Tucker: but its always in the spool folder? Mikael Fredriksson: You need aug 98 SAM or NAV data files Bob Nunn: I have heard that there are already variations. Bob Nunn: DELDB is on the desktop invisible. Mikael Fredriksson: I think they are 4-5 variations and Sam And NAV does take all Ken Sutherland: not always, also in extensions folder in apps like Photoshop and illustrator Rusty Tucker: hmm weird, Donald McHose: us Virex fans have to wait till 99 ;-( at least for 0s 8.5.1+ wormscan Rusty Tucker: nothing shows up here Rusty Tucker: The s Bob Nunn: I think outside media is the best way to get it. I have been running Worm Gobbler on Headgap and Wang's Servers with no trouble. Rusty Tucker: hey, time to run... Rusty Tucker: any last q's before we shut it down for today? Bob Nunn: Yep gotta go too. See you next week. Looking forward to the beta. Rusty Tucker: ok, c ya later ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- December 8, 1998 -- ©Copyright 1998, Spider Island Software
