CNN Newsroom "Ships Out" with Final Cut Pro (online at http://www.2-pop.com/)
2-pop recently spoke with Charles Tsai, a Producer for CNN & Fortune, part of the Primetime NewsStand Series on CNN.
In a project which promises to break new ground in terms of finishing "on the fly," Mr. Tsai and CNN & Time editor/producer David Timko are going on the road with Final Cut Pro to produce a 14-part series for CNN Newsroom entitled, "The Millennium Voyage." The show will give students of the "Semester at Sea" program a chance to share what they learn, as they embark on this last voyage of the millennium. Charles explains,
"Our trip will take us from Vancouver to Japan, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Malaysia, India, Egypt, Turkey, Croatia, Italy, Morocco, and back to Miami! We want the students stories to touch on issues that each culture (and our world in general) is grappling with at this time, i.e. environmental protection, racism, globalization, changing role of women."
The series will run on CNN Newsroom (4:30 a.m. ET on CNN, and various times on CNN International), a commercial-free program used by 36,000 schools in the U.S. and some in Europe.
"We're taking along two Canon XL-1 cameras, and renting two PowerMac G3s from AIS Computers in Atlanta. We need two edit systems (FCP) because we'll be traveling for 100 days -- if anything goes wrong, we have no way to fix it."
This will be the first time that either journalist has used the XL-1 or FCP - so, as Tsai explains, they're "a bit nervous." "We'll be shooting and editing as we go, and we're using DHL/FedEx to send our stories back."
Charles and David previously collaborated on a story about Dan Eldon, a Reuter's photographer who was killed in Somalia. Their piece, "The Art of Life: Dan Eldon in Africa" won a Silver Medal at the New York Festivals last year.
2-pop and the producers are currently working out details of providing streaming "Behind The Scenes" coverage of their production from several locations throughout the journey. We will update you on where and when these reports will be available.
