1. The Multimedia Wonder
In "Why you should buy an Apple this Christmas," David Coursey calls it "one of the best consumer Macs that Apple has ever designed":
Meanwhile, Sound and Vision's Al Griffin explains why he believes "Apple's Expansive iMac" offers "an unprecedented mix of features, performance, and value for $1,999":
Both reviewers are taken with Mac OS X v10.2, "Jaguar," and find the performance and technical prowess of iMac impressive. And both admire what iMac lets you do--with iPhoto, iTunes, iMovie, and iDVD (on models with a SuperDrive).
As Griffin puts it, " With its widescreen display, powerful video processing, excellent suite of bundled applications, and impressive Mac OS X v10.2 operating system, the newest iMac is a multimedia wonder."

2. 'Tis the Season
What can you get the music lovers on your gift list?
You'll have them purring if you get them Mac OS X v10.2 "Jaguar"--they need it to use iTunes 3, everyone's favorite digital music player.
Don't forget iPod. Now available for both Mac and Windows, iPod lets music lovers take their music anywhere, and you can have your gift engraved for just $19.95.
If they already own an iPod, you'll find solutions that let them connect iPod to their stereo system, play iPod in the car, or take iPod out of the country. We even have a headphone splitter that lets two people--or kids--share music or spoken books.

3. His Instruments of Choice
It may not be unusual for musicians to take more than one instrument on stage with them, but fans tend to notice when Jay Smith plugs the Viditar into his PowerBook G4.
A musician and performance artist, Smith invented the Viditar, a multimedia instrument that lets him play not just music but video, as well. Looking like a "futuristic sitar," the guitar-like instrument includes not frets but "a myriad of switches, sliders, toggles and buttons" that allow Smith to "play" over 100 QuickTime files per song.
Smith creates the video himself. Capturing it digitally, he edits the footage on his PowerBook with Final Cut Pro. He then plays the video onstage with his Viditar and his PowerBook, which projects the multimedia onto giant screens.
If you've seen "Gladiator," "The Ring," "The Thin Red Line," "The Prince of Egypt," "Pearl Harbor," "Black Hawk Down," "As Good As It Gets," or "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron," you've been enthralled by the music of Hans Zimmer.
Like so many other composers, Zimmer--with a suite of Power Mac G4 computers in his home studio and a PowerBook G4 for the road--depends enthusiastically on Apple technology.
In fact, Zimmer just added a new tool to his musical arsenal. He now keeps his entire library of scores with him at all time. "I have an iPod," he says in "Speaking Through Music," "and it's really useful to have all of the scores there as a reference library."

5. New for Mac OS X: Director MX
Whether they're creating content for the web, CDs, DVDs, or kiosks, multimedia authors generally reach for one powerful tool when developing media-rich interactive content. Macromedia Director.
So you can imagine how pleased they were to hear this recent announcement: Macromedia Director MX--the newest version of the application--will ship this month, letting authors develop and deploy the richest possible multimedia content in Mac OS X v10.2, "Jaguar."
The new version offers the ability to mix and integrate more media types than ever before. It allows multimedia authors to use QuickTime 6 to add MPEG4 streaming. And with its text-to-speech, captioning, tab-navigation, and self-voicing capabilities, Macromedia MX lets authors meet government accessibility guidelines.
In your haste to keep your Mac organized, have you ever moved a document to the wrong location? Luckily, Mac OS X v10.2 offers a simple solution, as Scott Kelby tells us in this tip excerpted from "Mac OS X Killer Tips."
"Did you just move a folder you didn't mean to move? Worse yet, did you ever unintentionally drop a file into the wrong folder?
Just Undo it--press Command-Z and the file will return to where it was before you moved it."

7. Technically Speaking
What's the easiest way to rate a song you have in your iTunes 3 library?
Hold down the Control key, click on the name of the song you'd like to rate, and when the contextual menu appears, select the rating you'd like to assign the song from the My Rating drop-down menu.
Of course, for the song's rating to appear, iTunes needs to know that you'd like the My Rating column to appear in your Library and/or playlist. That, too, can be accomplished via a contextual menu: hold down the Control key, click the column heading, and select My Rating from the contextual menu that appears. As an alternative, read the Knowledge Base article, "iTunes 3: How to Rate Songs."
