Since my MacWorld column was published on Wednesday, I've enjoyed an amazing outpouring of gratitude and good will from Mac users all over the world, thanks in part to links at various Apple Web sites.
Out of all the e-mail, the most touching messages came from Apple employees who have stuck with the company through good and bad times. They were encouraged to see some positive comments from a Windows user.
I can't wait for my iMac. McMe

Seth Dillingham, <seth@snet.net>
Yesterday I some some information about RC5, with a URL for the distributed-mac site, where you can get new clients, and do your best to make sure that Team Evangelist gets back to the number one spot.
Unfortunately, only a couple hours after the letter was sent, our hosting-service's upstream ISP went offline, unexpectedly, for 30+ hours.
Everything is back up and running now! If you tried to come by earlier and found that the site was down, please try again! (and if you didn't try earlier, why not?)

Thanks and please send your comment's on it to <mailto:edd@1984-online.com>
Team Evangelista has now fallen behind team Slashdot in the daily RC5 statistics at distributed.net.

This tidbit is from:
Charleen, <charleen@applelinks.com>
Applelinks.com <http://www.applelinks.com/> today announced the debut of a new bi-weekly column: Paul Shields "The Business Mac" <http://applelinks.pair.com/business_mac/index.shtml>. Each week the The Business Mac focuses on topics relevant to the business user, both large and small. Biweekly columns will cover products and industry trends that are relevant to the enterprise and SOHO community. All columns are designed to provide resources that can be used to enhance productivity in a office environment. The columns include a mix of editorial content, industry analysis, resource identification and occasional reviews of compelling products.
Paul's first column, The SOHO Macintosh User <http://applelinks.pair.com/business_mac/soho_mac.shtml> focuses on how the Mac is evolving into an excellent solution for the small-office and home-office (SOHO) user. There is a growing population of SOHO users in the US, and potentially all over the world, as more people start their own business or pursue a career from home. While the Mac has struggled to compete in the enterprise market for a variety of reasons, it is well suited to the SOHO worker for a variety of reasons.

Date: Tue, 28 Jul 1998 08:06:35 -0800 From: John Halbig <john@garage.com> Subject: PR - Andrew's Disk Copy Scripts 2.1
This announcement is from:
Andrew McNaughton, <andrew@patsy.demon.co.uk>
Announcing the public release of Andrew's Disk Copy Scripts 2.1
These scripts provide access the hidden features of Apple's Disk Copy disk image utility.
Although there are other scripts with similar capabilities; I know that you'll find mine to be more robust and much nicer to use. They were simply out there first and they have a well established following.
SegmentSMIer can instruct Disk Copy to :
segment images into your chosen number of parts; segment images into 1.4 MB floppy disk sized parts, for floppy archiving an image; make a NDIF disk image or first segment into a self-mounting image or 'SMI'.
DropMakeSMI will instruct Disk Copy to create a self-mounting image of any NDIF image dropped onto it on the desktop of your startup disk. Not as flexible as SegmentSMIer, but speedier and just as robust.
ImageCheck will induce Disk Copy to run a special internal check sequence on any disk image dropped onto it and inform you if it found a problem.
Floppy Archiver allows you to have a compressed NDIF image to be made instantaneously on the desktop of your startup disk from the 1.4 MB floppy disk you just dragged onto it. Speeds up archiving of floppy disks to some other media.
What's new in 2.1 :
The inclusion of two news droplets: DropMakeSMI and ImageCheck; You can now tip me through the reputable Kagi Payment Service; More technical tweaking; New viewable scripts also now available; Much revised PDF Read Me.
What was new in v2.0 :
New easy-to-use button-oriented interface; Data entry verification (you can only choose to make between 2 and 128 segments); Ability to make images Self-Mounting, i.e. images independent of Disk Copy; SegmentSMIer combines the functionality of Segmenter 1.5.x and Image Floppier 1.5.x; Ability to choose where you want the output files to go; Correct handling of all cancellations; With Disk Copy 6.3, dialogs use Navigation Services where available; Further technical tweaking and compatible with Mac OS 8.5; Read Me now in PDF format.
System requirements :
For best results work with Disk Copy version 6.3 or later. Mac OS 8.1 (or later) and Disk Copy 6.3 are required for creating self-mounting images.
For more information, please read the PDF Read Me file within the package.

Date: Tue, 28 Jul 1998 13:44:44 -0700 From: Guy Kawasaki <Kawasaki@garage.com> Subject: PR - Pretty Scroll 2.0 Released
This announcement is from:
Johnny C N Lee, <johnny@johnnylee.com>
Pretty Scroll - animates scrolling so you can follow the window & find last point easily
Pretty Scroll is a control panel that animates scrolling. When scrolling through a document, it is sometimes hard to find the last point you viewed, especially if it was located near the end of the document. Pretty Scroll makes it easier. Because the scrolling process is animated, you can follow the movement and find the last point easily.
What's new in 2.0? - - Changed user interface -- Appearance Manager (Mac OS 8) savvy. - - Added new feature -- Exclude Applications. - - Changed scrolling algorithm -- Only visible part of the window is animated, and animation of scrolling is smoother.

This follow-up message is from:
The Grogie Frog, <grogiefrog@ixpres.com>
As reported in our Notes & Notables section yesterday, CNN will be airing a special report on Apple's "turnaround" during its NewsStand program Wednesday night at 10 pm EDT. In a commercial for the program, the network talked glowingly about Apple's turnaround and the investment opportunity that Apple presents going forward. They even went so far as to say that, "Apple is back from the dead." With the major media seemingly coming around one can only imagine how much positive press Apple will see after the iMac's release.
Hi 'listas! Now that the Atlantic hurricane season is starting to move into high gear, I would like to get my hands on some tracking software. I did a search on the net and was a bit disapointed on the lack of Mac software. Could anyone point me and any other intrested Mac users on where we could find such a product? Thanks in advance, Paul.

Deaver Brown, CEO & Publisher of Simply Media stated, "Now that Steve is back in charge we all have confidence in Apple. We put in the extra work to make the graphics work on Mac because, as everyone knows, Mac has leadership in that area. We are delighted we can give Intuit a run for their money in the Mac tax preparation software market. New competition can only create more value for Mac users and Apple itself."
