I just wanted to thank everyone who emailed me regarding my quest for any updates about C.A.T. software from Chang Labs. I must have received over 50 responses, may form people like me who still use or were past users. The feedback was common:
CAT is only sold thru consultants Chang labs abandoned CAT for the internet iSales offers a similar program (I have not verified this yet).
Evangelist does work & thanks again for posting my CAT QUEST.
Best Regards to all Jim Stern <mailto:jstern1@aol.com>

This tidbit is from:
"S. Busko" <mailto:cmyk@dnsonline.net>
A co-worker charged with surveying all our venders for Y2k compliance received the following reply in response to our query:
RE: Y2k, 2000, Millenium, Viruses, Security Breaches, etc.
Dear Worried Customer:
We at [Vendor Name] are also concerned about what's going to happen to everyone's computers in the year 2000. Fortunately for us, (and you) we took the initiative several years ago to organize our systems around Macintosh computers. We have also guided our critical suppliers in the use of Macintosh computers. Unlike MSdos based computers, whose Armageddon comes in the year 2000, our Macintoshs will perform perfectly through the next several centuries.
Since the introduction of Macintosh computers, we have slowly switched everything over so that we don't have to participate in the annual rash of panics from viruses, hacks, and security leaks that the DOS world seems to be constantly embroiled in. Now that the end of the world is coming, we simply expect to sit back and watch it happen.
Surely we will all suffer from this fiasco in some way or another. Our entire personal and business lives are entwined in this computer system designed by short sighted geeks. Not that [Vendor Name] is totally exempt from this disaster. It's just that our systems and products will not contribute to the confusion.
We can certify that none of our products know or care what planet they're on, let alone what year it is. We can also safely certify that our computer systems will not even hiccup until the year 29,740. After that, we really have no plans, but we'll get back to you.

Date: Mon, 1 Mar 1999 02:06:26 -0800 From: The EvangeList Mailing List <evangelist@apple.com> Subject: ?? - EDI Software Needed
This request is from:
Rob Stevenson <mailto:rstevenson@accesscable.net>
I'm VP of everything technical at a new publishing company -- Mac based of course. We create greeting cards and related products. I've barcoded the products with no trouble, but am now hitting a road block. A large retailer may want our cards, but they will certainly want to receive our bar code data electronically, so they don't have to manually enter it into their POS database. Sending such information between trading partners is one aspect of Electonic Data Interchange or EDI.
EDI requires software at the sending and receiving end of every transaction. An EDI translator allows you to trade information using different software at each end of the transaction. EDI management systems help you to perform a number of basic functions. These include:
* Validation of inbound and outbound EDI transactions against EDI standards * Management and administration of the EDI environment * Communication between a manufacturer (that's us) and retailers
I can find all sorts of vendors that sell EDI software for Wintel or even main frame systems. But nothing so far for Mac. I've found Mac bar code hardware and software vendors, but nothing for EDI on Mac. (Not quite true. Through the Evangelist web site archive I found Digit Software at <http://www.digitsw.com>. They apparently have a product called MacEDI, but there is very little information about it on the site.)
Somewhere out there in Evangelist land lies the answer to my problem. I'd prefer a FileMaker-based solution, or at least one that will cooperate with FileMaker and/or with MYOB, perhaps with an AppleScript intermediary.
Any help much appreciated. I'll post a summary to the list of course.

Date: Mon, 1 Mar 1999 02:06:58 -0800 From: The EvangeList Mailing List <evangelist@apple.com> Subject: Extension Overload V3.3
Teng Chou Ming <mailto:tengcm@tm.net.my>
Extension Overload v3.3 is finally here!
You have noticed those icons that march across your screen when your Mac starts. Those icons represent extensions and control panels installed in your system folder. Did you ever wonder what they are or even if they are needed or useful?
Extension Overload lists 1236 extensions and control panels (alphabetically), and tells you what each one is there for, what it does and when it is needed - and also when it is not needed.
This means you can streamline your system folder and make it lean, mean and fast. You keep the ones that are useful and discard the ones that simply take up space. It makes sense to create a machine that isn't "overweight". Such a machine is more secure, crashes less often and runs a heck of a lot faster.
Extension Overload is ready to assist you if:
* you have recurring crashes. * you have an extension conflict. * you want to make your system use as little RAM as possible. * you want to save disk space by deleting unnecessary files. * you want to know what all the items in your System Folder do. * you are an experienced user who needs a handy reference. * you are a novice user who wants to learn his way around the machine.
And there is more to Extension Overload ! ! !
* It contains information about Mac Error Codes. * It also contains information about Easter Eggs (those special gimmicks hidden within your software). Most of these are humorous and fun. * Dozens and dozens of ways to make your Mac go faster, optimizing both hardware and software. It's fun to take some of these suggestions see how your machine responds!
Extension Overload can be found at <http://www.mir.com.my/~cmteng/>

Date: Mon, 1 Mar 1999 02:07:34 -0800 From: The EvangeList Mailing List <evangelist@apple.com> Subject: PR - You Can Tango For Free
This announcement is from:
Greg Meece <mailto:gmeece@pervasive.com>
Attention Evangelistas! Now you can make a formerly PC-only company sit up and notice Mac users, plus get an incredible Web/database integration tool for FREE!
Pervasive Software, Inc. (my employer) recently purchased a Canadian company called Everyware Development. Everyware started out as a Mac-only company, with their flagship product called "Tango". Tango is a CGI/Plugin development environment for tying databases to the web so you can create dynamic web pages on the fly. If you've ever logged onto a site and typed in a query (finding specific types of products, or names of people, or whatever), then you've used this type of technology. In fact, because Tango is available on Windows, Macintosh, and several flavors of Unix, it's likely you've visited a site which operates with Tango (including many Mac-based/oriented sites).
Pervasive has historically been a PC-only company, and was formerly a part of Novell. With the acquisition of Everyware, Pervasive now has a solid Mac product. In order to get as many people excited about Tango, they are - for a limited time - giving Tango away. You can either download the product or order the CD. The download is close to 60 Mb, so unless you've got a high-speed connection, you may want to order the CD.
On a personal note, this is the first job I've held in 11 years where I didn't work on a Mac to some degree. I'd like to send a clear message to Pervasive that not only are Mac users savvy and active on the internet, but continue to demand world-class products for the Mac platform as well. They are tracking the response for each platform, so I'd like to surprise them with the Mac numbers! I'm not a marketing/sales person - just a Quality Engineer excited about this product.
If you don't believe you'll ever have use for a product like Tango, don't just download or order the CD just to boost the numbers. But, if you are serious about deploying a web-based database application on the internet or your intranet (or think you might be), check out Tango and then go for it.
You can click on the "Download Tango Free" icon on Pervasive's web site: <http://www.pervasive.com/> If you'd like to know a bit more about the product before you order/download, go to: <http://tango.pervasive.com/products/tango/webjump/Page.taf?page=Produ ct> I should let everyone know that the "catch" to all this is simply that Pervasive will have your name, e-mail, etc. for their internal marketing purposes. They will NOT sell your name to anyone else, however.
To paraphrase Guy, "Kick Hiney, Evangelistas!" ;-)

This request is from:
Dick Williams <mailto:dickw@amsys.co.uk>
I have spent the last year searching but still have not found what I want!!
I have searched high and low for software for the Macintosh (Filemaker based preferrably but anything else would do) that is suitable for use by a recruitment company. Recruitment software designed for employment agencies and search firms is the type of thing that I am after - basically matching candidates with jobs and vice-versa.
Any pointers would be very much appreciated.
Cheers from England
