This request is from:
JASON NOLAN <mailto:jason.nolan@utoronto.ca>
I have a friend, who is happy as punch with his iMac, but can't find any good software for advancing his knowledge of French. He's found some Windows stuff, and I've suggested an emulator for his PC, but we're both wondering what else might be about.
He's interested in software that targets the intermediate and advanced levels, not introduction or beginners.
If there are a significant number of responses, I'd be happy to whip up a web page for results.

Each year APC (Australian Personal Computer) gives out editorial awards for innovation and excellence. These usually feature Wintel products as that is the general area covered by the magazine. This year some of the awards they gave (in the January 1999 issue) were :
Innovation Award 1998 : IBM CMOS 7S
Using copper on chips to make them run faster. Rumoured to be used on the G4 which will follow on from the......
Upgrade of 1998 : Motorola G3 "
Although PowerPC has always been an underrated processor family, it has outperformed x86 processors for pretty much as long as it has been around. And when Mototrola introduced the G3 (or 750) processor, it widened the gulf further".
The G3, of course, is used in......
Consumer Product of 1998 : Apple iMac
This is described in slightly wistful terms as "an excellent product for people not accustomed with the intricacies of PCs".
Product of the year? The one given for a product that promises "significant enhancement of the computing experience, and shows particular insight into its target market"? The iMac of course.
APC can be reached on apcmag.com

I am pleased to announce the grand opening of Portable 1, a new web site dedicated to supplying information about Apple's upcoming consumer portable machine (codenamed P1). Portable 1 offers many services including weekly news stories, rumored product specs and prices, as well as a place for insiders to submit rumors about what is sure to be a revolutionary portable computer to follow in the footsteps of the wildly successful iMac. Sponsors are also welcome as we are seeking revenue to help us provide Mac portable users with even more services and hopefully a few contests.
