Building A Home Office
By Paul Shields <http://applelinks.pair.com/business_mac/office.shtml>
More people are working at home than ever. Whether for a home-based business or a telecommuter, demand for a home office is on the rise. Many people convert an old guest room, some move into the basement, and others look at ways to carve a little space out of an existing living room or den. No matter where you place your office, there are several things to consider while putting it together. This week we will focus on building and furnishing the office. The guidelines for a home-based business and those for telecommuters vary slightly at times and I have tried to point out any differences.

It's been a long time coming, but as of next Monday, January 4, 1999, Mac's Diner <http://www.macsdiner.com/> is back with a vengeance! We'll have new departments, new content and a brand new "slicker" look we know you'll love.
Readers of this list will want to make sure to read our exclusive interview with Guy Kawasaki and our review of his new book, _Rules for Revolutionaries_. We're also proud of our new "Back Room" support community for authors, developers and publishers of software.
Other new departments include listings of commercial software, the start of a series of articles teaching small publishers how to market and promote their software, a bookstore with recommended reading related to the content of the site, and much more.
All authors and publishers are encouraged to check out the many free opportunities Mac's Diner offers to help market and promote their products, ranging from free listings in the software sections (now including commercial software), to software and book reviews, profiles of indivduals involved in the software industry, and other opportunities. Full details will be available at the Mac's Diner Web site.
If you liked the "old" Mac's Diner, you'll *love* the new one! Cruise on by next Monday, January 4, 1999... and help us kick some serious butt!
Thanks! -Rick Buck.

Date: Wed, 6 Jan 1999 02:05:27 -0800 From: The EvangeList Mailing List <evangelist@apple.com> Subject: ?? - Relational Database Applications For Macintosh
I am a Mac user stuck in an academic medical center which is heavily into Wintel products, but grudgingly supports Macintosh. I help maintain a small Microsoft Access database on emergency visits and produce some simple statistical reports from the database for department planning, and for tracking utilization of medical resources. No one in our Information Resources Department is Macintosh-savvy enough to answer my questions (or cares very much, in my opinion).
My problem is that I want to be able to analyze data from the database on my trusty PowerMac (7500/100), and am having a hard time deciding which database application to purchase which will also be able to import data from the Access database format. (Although I have learned enough about relational databases to use Access, I am not a computer expert, just a motivated user.) I *could* run an Windows emulation application such as Virtual PC and then use Access, but am concerned about how slow and cumbersome that will be. I also need the solution to cost under $800, preferably much less if possible. I have two basic questions:
1. Does anyone have experience with 4th Dimension Version 6 on importing data from Access databases? Is this easy to do using the 4D Connectivity plug-ins offered by ACI US?
2. Does FileMaker Pro have the capacity to run statistics on its databases (basic means, standard deviations, etc)? Does it handle formulas and calculations on the data rather than just finding specific matching records in the database? The demo that I downloaded did not appear to have this function available, and the Claris literature does not seem to answer this.
Thanks in advance for any hints or help you can give me.

St. Clair Software has released version 3.1.1 of Sleeper, its popular screen saver and energy-saving utility.
Sleeper provides Macintosh users with a host of energy-saving features that work on the entire Macintosh line, from the Mac Plus to the latest G3 PowerMacs, and allows greater control than Apple's Energy Saver control panel. Version 3.1.1 includes several compatibility improvements, including:
- - A problem that could result in crashes during startup has been fixed. - Compatibility has been improved with YoYo when phone calls come in during sleep. - "Wake up disk while powering up monitor" will no longer power up unmounted drives. - The checkbox for Energy Star monitor power-down was not being disabled on non Energy Star-compliant Macs. This has been fixed. - The Sleeper control panel now displays correctly on black and white monitors.
Further details and the update are available online from:
<http://www.stclairsoft.com/Sleeper/release.html>
Sleeper 3.1.1 is free to registered users of earlier versions of Sleeper.

This tidbit is from:
Heng-Cheong Leong <mailto:hcleong@krdl.org.sg>
AppleSurf <http://www.macopinion.com/applesurf/> is now running an experiment, where webmasters can add links to it automatically. (In case you haven't seen AppleSurf before, this web site is yet another news/rumors/opinions headlines collection web site.)
Currently, this service is limited to links to opinion pieces (such as "Why Apple Should Buy Microsoft") and not to articles such as news or press releases or rumors. Interested webmasters will have to apply for a password in order to use the service. (Just to weed out the spams, I hope.) I will open up to all kinds of articles if this experiment proves to be successful.

This tidbit is from:
Keith Crosbie <mailto:kcrosbie@outrageous.net>
Dennis Miller Live starts its new season this Friday. And I assume that everyone has seen the commercial where Dennis replaces the spinning Volkswagen Beetle. Well in the Jan. 8, 1999 issue of Entertainment Weekly, Dennis mimics another very successful ad campain... Apple's "Think Different." The ad is on page 56. If you don't have this issue of Entainment Weekly, I took a picture of it with my QuickTake 200 and posted it at:
