We have been using macs at the Malden Public Library since 1984...our MacPlus and Mac SE still soldier on for specific tasks to this day. In 1996 we opened a new addition and were required to purchase pc's for our shared computer system which would be using Windows....at the same time we bought 2 powermac 7200/90's for office/graphics work.
Every one of the pc's have been back to the manufacturer for replacement parts or troubleshooting...it became so disruptive on our main information desk that we 'stole' a powermac from the office and installed in on the information desk. That was two months ago. We had to 'retrain' our librarians for the mac o/s which took about 20 minutes, but they missed the task bar. We purchased GOMAC for the powermac and now they have no confusion going from the mac to windows. We now have a secure workstation. Incidentally, not one of our macs have seen a technician for repair or anything else. Now that is a track record!

A year ago this month, Insanely Great Mac started on its journey to go from a hobby web page to the full blown site it is today. To help celebrate our first year online, we are giving away a copy of Microsoft Office 98 Standard Edition for the Mac.
The giveaway runs from June 1 until August 1, 1998. On August 1, 1997, Insanely Great Mac officially became a daily Mac news and information web page. A year and a couple million hits later, Insanely Great Mac is still here and growing strong.
To enter, just visit our Office Giveaway page. You may enter more than once, but only once a day. Multiple daily entries will automatically be filtered out. One lucky reader will get their name drawn on our birthday, August 1st, 1998. We will contact the winner via email for notification and shipping information. Date: Tue, 9 Jun 1998 02:06:57 -0800 From: John Halbig <john@garage.com> Subject: Tidbit - IGM Reviews RAID for MAc
I've just finished an in depth look at using a RAID on a Mac. About a month ago, I built a RAID to be used on my own Mac, and I've been very happy with the results. In the review, I share my experiences and help readers build their own RAID. The review is a great resource for users who are just curious about disk arrays or want to build or update their own RAID.
Simply put, a RAID is when you take two or more hard drives and combine them so your Mac utilizes the drives as a single volume. A RAID can be used to increase performance, reliability, or both.
The review of the project can be found at <http://www.insanely-great.com/reviews/raid.html>
The review is broken down into several chapters/parts:
* Begining - Why and how I made a RAID
* SCSI Demystified - IDE and various forms of SCSI compared
* Different Types of SCSI Hard Drives - Different hard drives for SCSI Macs
* Drives and heat - Proper hard drive heat dissipation
* Advantages of Teflon - Why Teflon cables are ideal for use with high speed data.
* RAID Demystified - What a RAID is and what it is used for
* Tests - The hard numbers on using drives on different SCSI buses
* RAID in the Real World - How regular users can utilize a RAID
* Get your own RAID - If this sounds like something you would like to do, IGM can get you some deals.

This follow-up message is from:
Todd Stauffer, <todds@pcisys.net>
A number of readers have requested that I keep them apprised of the status of Mac Upgrade and Repair Bible for IDG, so I thought I'd jot a quick note now that I have a bit of breathing room in the schedule.
After a few weeks (weeks that felt more like I was trying to write a new term paper every day than a book), I've gotten the first draft done. Now it goes through the fine people at IDG Books and elsewhere who have been brought on the project as technical and development editors. It's shaping up very nicely, not the least of which are the anecdotes and tips provided by experts and Evangelistas. I've updated the list of needs below -- please write me if you have an anecdote or tip. I can't use them all, but I've been using a lot of them, and it's really making the book a pleasurable read for a reference guide. I can still fit some in at this phase, but I only have about 10 days left!
If you have an Evangelista Tip or Anecdote that you'd like featured in a sidebar in this book, let me know. So far about 25 tips have been used, with a ton of other mail coming in to support the project and ask about updates. I welcome all your messages of encouragement, criticism, suggestions and just plain support. Just try to send them by June 15.
Here's a list of the type of anecdote/tip I can still use:
Dealing with static electricity Installing hard drives Cleaning/maintaining input devices Scanners (using, installing, choosing, speeding up) Printers (using, installing, getting great output) Font management System (Mac OS) Troubleshooting hints or advice Backup tips and solutions Networking tips and tricks -- faster, more reliable, troubleshooting SCSI VooDoo -- how do you solve the problems? PowerBook upgrades, speed enhancements, favorite tricks System maintenance -- hardware and software
If you've got ideas on this or more, let me know. Send an email message to <tstauffer@aol.com> with the subject line "Mac Anecdote."
Thanks for everyone who has participated so far and to everyone who has sent me friendly mail on this subject. It's been the toughest thing I've ever done professionally to write this 800 page book, but it's been fun and rewarding because it's not only about the Macintosh, it's also a book about an important community of involved and concerned users. I appreciate your help in this effort.
Best wishes,
Todd

This tidbit is from:
Ryan Garcia, <hose@webelite.com>
Just read the following story on Variety's Web site: <http://www.variety.com/article.asp?articleID=1117471435>
The story, "HBO Over the 'Moon'", says that fans were so pleased with the Hanks directed series "From the Earth to the Moon" that they're developing more mini-series. One such series will be done with Hanks and will focus on the history of the Apple computer company.
Finally, HBO thinks different. I'm so there it hurts. __________________________ Digital Guy Sez:

This tidbit is from:
Walli Haley, <wallih@sprynet.com>
I saw this posted on the list-serve of my internet service provider, Sprynet, which recently posted an article about the Year 2000 Bug.
Y2K Revisited
"We received lots of comments on the 'Year 2000 Bug' article in the last issue. Some people thought we treated the subject too lightly, and others were wondering about the software aspects of the problem, since we discussed only computer hardware.
Macintosh devotees were quick to point out that their beloved Macs were immune to the Y2K bug, since Apple was better at anticipating the future than non-Apple programmers..."

We are also going to be producing a special print issue (30,000 copies) at our launch during Macworld Expo New York for distribution on the show floor. We are going to be throwing in some free ads in our electronic edition of The Mac Report to Evangelists (or their companies) who buy an ad in the Macworld special print edition of The Mac Report. Hurry, the deadline is June 19. For more information, visit the page listed above.
Also, we are going to be having a regular feature each week on a different Mac user groups from all over the globe. If you know of a group that is exceptional, e-mail me at <lucas@macreport.com>. If your user group goes the extra mile, I want to write about it.
Finally, although we have all our staff positions filled (by mostly Evangelists), we are still interested in entertaining article ideas. Let us know what you want us to write about.
Thanks once again to the Evangelist. With your help, we are going to have at least one Mac newsweekly. Stop by and say hello at Macworld. We'll be in booth 1551.

This request is from:
David Grimes, <dgrimes@tstar.com>
Does anyone know where I can get a font called "Wet Paint"? I used to have it until I experienced a hard drive "incident". The characters look like they were painted with a wide paint brush. All my other fonts except for this one made it into a backup file, and I can't remember where I got it. My web searches have been fruitless.
If you have it or know where I can get it, please send it or it's whereabouts to me at <dgrimes@tstar.com>
