This announcement is from:
Greg Giese, <GGIESE@M9.SPRYNET.COM>
This allows anyone to become a dealer for our software and for an annual subscription price, access unlimited quantities of CD-ROMs priced to the dealer at $2.00 each. Custom printing with your company name, logo or message is available for an additional charge.
For a subscription price as low as $1,600 per year, you can purchase and distribute our CD-ROMs for $2.00 each. The annual subscription rate will vary for larger volume dealers.
The first CD-ROM we are offering in this innovative new program is our AVIATION CD-ROM. This program is perfect for Pilot Shops, FBOs, Pilot Organizations or Flight Schools who want to have access to FAA information at a reasonable price. You can also use this dealer program for fundraising, customer incentives, or employee bonus.
For example, if your pilot organization had 1,000 members the annual subscription price would be $1,600 and 1,000 x $2.00/CD would equate to a total price of $3,600 -or- $3.60 per CD-ROM. A great way to distribute information at a very low price. Imagine offering your organization a full-featured CD-ROM for as low as $3.60 ! Of course if you are a dealer you can offer the software at a price level which is consistent to generating income.
And our CD-ROMs are updated every six months !
We are introducing this innovative software distribution method to generate cash flow to improve our products and start a host of new CD-ROM projects. Support is not included in this dealer program.
Other CD-ROMs which are available are the Maritime CD-ROM, Student Office CD-ROM, and All-Program CD-ROM.

Date: Wed, 18 Mar 1998 02:11:22 -0000 From: EvangeList <evangelist@apple.com> Subject: Tidbit - Two Good Experiences
Keyword: Advocacy, Macintosh in Action
This tidbit is from:
<Michael_Dabrosca@csaa>
Last week I had two experiences which made me feel real good about the current state of Macintosh retail sales.
First, while strolling through downtown San Francisco, I went into the Virgin Records megastore on Market Street. The top floor has laserdiscs, DVD and...computer software. What drew my attention to the software area was a rack of MacOS8 boxes! Yep! That's the first product you see when you venture into the software area. The boxes were separated in three different major categories: Macintosh, Hybrid and Windows. The Mac stuff was located, of course, in the frontmost aisles, and there was lots of it. Lots of hybrid titles right behind the Mac stuff. The windows software was sort of hidden (I think, cuz I really didn't bother looking for that stuff as it was somewhere against the back wall!).
Check out their website at:
<http://www.virginrecords.com/virgin.html>
and e-mail them with thanks! - ----- My second good experience was when checking out a Grand Opening of a new Computown in Novato, California, just north of San Francisco. I wanted to see how they were promoting the Apple merchandise. As I walked in, the first Big Thing I saw was a pile of Macintosh G3 boxes! And not far away were three or four G3s lines up and running a slick demo that the salesman said some reps from Apple had just dropped by to install (and this was a Sunday afternoon!!). The Macs were on a counter by themselves, unsullied by Wintel units. And, they were in front of the Wintels as you walk in from the front of the store.
A note about the demo. There seemed to be no access to the Finder for things to get screwed up. The demo lets you click on demos, and after a short period of inactivity, it kicks into a wild and attractive display of info about Apple and Macintosh. (Applause)
Here's the good part: The salesman was very enthusiastic about my interest in a new G3. He said he recently bought one for his wife for home use (sigh) and was so blown away by the performance that he now considers himself a "convert" to the Mac platform! He claimed that the G3 is "four times faster than any Pentium" he has ever seen. Of course, these were his observations, but wowee!! this was a very impressive endorsement.
And the G3/233 tower that I've been lusting for? Now that I have finally gotten my hands on one to try out...uh-oh...I'm gonna have to get one of these right away! They are incredible...especially since the price has dropped to under $2000!

Date: Wed, 18 Mar 1998 02:12:02 -0000 From: EvangeList <evangelist@apple.com> Subject: ?? - SGML and Sgml Editor
This request is from:
David Russell, <David_R@mindspring.com>
I think I may have asked this question before but I wanted to give it another shot.
We use SoftQuad's Author/Editor for the (non-power) Macintosh for the bulk of our work. To say it's slow is an understatement. The only time an employee doesn't actually have to wait for the computer is when it's running on a G3/266. Unfortunately, almost everyone is using a 6100/66.
SoftQuad has shown no interest in releasing an update in a timely manner. Current versions exist for the PC but that's not an option (I'd rather buy 10 G3's than buy 10 copies of VPC and 64MB RAM/CPU.
While a 'real' SGML editor would be nice, it's not mandatory. The reason we use A/E is to have the capabilities associated with the 'rules' and 'styles' files and the ability to protect the tags as well as specify the style within the tags. Nisus works great but it's clumsy. Using FileMaker Pro is great in concept but in practice is too rigid. FrameMaker might work but I can almost buy a G3 for the same price.
I've worked with PageSpinner and PageMill and don't recall them having enough flexibility and power for us. I think they are the closest however, to the ideal, sort of a BBEdit+SGML, the only additional requirement being the ability to key in non-Latin languages.
Does anybody have any suggestions?
Secondly, why is there such a shortage of SGML software for the Mac? HTML is a subset of SGML, and ironically, a huge % of HTML is created on Macs? Any thoughts?
John, this is a weird convergence again...I JUST got my April 98 BYTE, and one of the cover stories is titled "Benchmarks: What they don't tell you"
there's a telling quote (p82):
"The BYTEMark benchmark suite was developed by the BYTE lab in 1995. Although BYTEmark is considered a synthetic benchmark in the sense that it's not composed of real-world applications (such as those contained in Bapco's SYSmark), it's based on algorithms widely found in popular engineering, multimedia and business applications. All 10 programs in the BYTEmark suite report their results in terms of iterations per second, but their problem-solving nature sets them apart from the typical repetitive loops in smaller benchmarking programs. Instead of repeatedly performing simple calculations, the BYTEmark programs use sample data to generate results that closely approximate the performance of real applications."
Byte also commented in a review of PowerPC systems in August 97 (a prototype PowerComputing PPC750 system) that it turned in the fasted benchmarks they'd ever seen in a desktop computer...
But why not test 'em yourself??? the BYTEmarks are available for download at <http://www.byte.com>
