Any questions about the stability of Apple servers?
For this company of about 30 people, we have an Apple Workgroup Server 9150/120 with 48 mb RAM running Macintosh System 7.6. The support software installed includes AIMS, NetPresenz, Webstar, Timbuktu Pro, and Personal File Sharing.
This particular server handles our internet and intranet traffic, acts as our web server, email server, FTP server, and is administered using Timbuktu. In a typical day, it sees hundreds of megabytes of information coming and going.
As far as the server's stability (and coincidentally the reason we're still running this one on System 7.6), see for yourself:
<http://www.bteinc.com/site.ssi> (Look near the bottom of the page)
As you can see, this particular server has been up a bit shy of a year! We haven't done any major upgrades recently simply because we want to see how long it'll go without a restart. Now THAT'S a reliable server.
Thanks, Apple!

The EvangeLista message forums, using WebStar, Timbuktu, and Interaction 1.2 (I know, Terje, I need to upgrade to 2.0 :) at <http://www.believers.apple.com> has been running now since October of last year (1997!). It's been relatively safe from my compulsive tinkering because it's located in a server room somewhere in the bowels of Apple Infinit Loop.
I also run a Mac server for my home network which is running NetPresenz, Vicom Internet Gateway, EIMS, MacDNS and LetterRip (what can I say, I believe in walking the walk as well...how can I honestly stand forth against wintel bigots if I don't have REAL experience with what I'm talking about?) under 8.1. The only reason this puppy has had to be restarted is because I'm always trying out new network packages or adjusting things to make it move just a little bit faster. It's been well over a year since I've come home to find the server crash.
Oh, and the occaisional power outage...and yes, my next purchase is a UPS. :-)
In April Windows NT Systems magazine the Editor-in-chief Nicholas Baran wrote an editorial titled "Sore Winners" in which he took both Andy Grove and Bill Gates to task for recent unneccessary bully tactics. The concluding paragraph is terrific, considering the magazine's venue:
"I wish Microsoft would spend more time fixing some of the glaring problems with Windows and less time throwing its weight around. For example, try shift-clicking to select a bunch (but not all) of the icons in a folder. It doesn't work properly in either Windows NT or Windows 95 (it works perfectly on a Mac), and my guess is, it never will."
See <http://www.ntsystems.com/nts204tc.htm> for the entire editorial.

That's actually the biggest problem I have switching from one OS to another (hey, I occaisionally help misguided friends who are stuck Wintel boxes :): I'll use a shortcut that I use all the time on the Mac without thinking about it, and I'll get the dreaded "unexpected results".
If memory serves, I think OS/2 handles shift-clicking correctly. :-)

This announcement is from:
Smiley-Info, <smiley-info@geocities.com>
Well, after a long, arduous journey, we've finally completed VisFX 1.0. VisFX is our latest colorscheme for Kaleidoscope 1.5 and up, and features ramplike scrollbars, lightup window "widgets", rounded growboxes, etc. As usual, the colorscheme is free and designed with ResEdit. It's lighter than its predecessor, Isaac, tho; and uses embossed text generously. (Speaking of which, a new version of Isaac is planned for compatbility with Mac OS 8.)
For more info, see <http://members.tripod.com/~smileyinfo/visfx.html>. The download URL is <http://members.tripod.com/~smileyinfo/visfx_10.hqx>. (We are working to phase out the GeoCities page to pave the way for a site redesign. This won't happen very soon however.) In case you're wondering, Kaleidoscope 1.8.2 can be had from <http://www.kaleidoscope.net/>.
Have fun, fellow Mac'ers!! :)

Date: Fri, 13 Mar 1998 02:11:38 -0000 From: EvangeList <evangelist@apple.com> Subject: PR - Disk Charmer 3.1.1
This announcement is from:
Fabrizio Oddone, <fabrizio@home.com>
You don't have to wait for Rhapsody to initialize disks in background...
Disk Charmer is a neat utility that lets you conveniently erase and copy disks, and handle disk images in DiskCopy and DiskDup+ format. If you have Mac OS 8.1, you can now use the Mac OS Extended format (a.k.a. HFS Plus) and even set the minimum allocation block size. Disk Charmer lets you create larger disks: you gain 8K on 800K disks, 18K on HD disks, 1.5MB on Zips.
Help Balloons are everywhere. Disk Charmer has a nice, modeless interface. It fully supports drag&drop. It supports the handy "Undo" feature we all know and love.
For more info, check out the Disk Charmer web page: <http://www.kagi.com/authors/fab/diskcharmer.html>
Disk Charmer is US$10 shareware. Download links are available from my web site.
Disk Charmer requires System 7.0 or later.
Disk Charmer was recently mentioned in MacWEEK: <http://www.zdnet.com/zdnn/content/macw/1208/287137.html>
New since version 3.1:
* Attempts to work around the infamous Apple Menu Options bug (thanks to a kind, knowledgeable soul...)
* The Make disks larger option now creates slightly "less larger" disks that cannot be corrupted by Mac OS 8.1 (see the separate document for details; thanks, Franois Grieu).
