UPS offers customers a variety of software tools to help businesses obtain cost and tracking information about parcels, both thru their website and thru software downloadable for UPS account holders. Unfortunately, in 1997 they failed to upgrade the most efficient tool - the UPS Quickcost Calculator (desktop, off-line version). Now it is 1998 and no indication is being made about releasing a Mac version. The comments made in the past by their tech support personnel indicate that they don't think a significant number of Mac owners need this. Mind you this is FREE sw.
What can Evangilistas do? IF you have a daily pick-up account and use the Mac for your nusiness, please take the time to fill out the technical support form <http://www.ups.com/about/helpdesk.html> asking for more sw (especially the off-line Quickcost calculator.
Secondly, if you receive a followup from NFO Interactive to take a survey on the usefulness of the UPS site (well designed except for the bias in OS) <http://netraweb.nfo-interactive.com/research> . You will need the user id and password they send in your followup. Their site also seems to think computer = PC.
I am not asking you to flame UPS - I just hope I am not the last Mac user trying to run a business and remain a UPS customer. Using the web site costs more time and money (during work hours ISDN rates are highest, and delay invoicing time since the web version is slower and more cumbersome.
Thank you, Irene Seales Mac user and Soapmaker _________

Acrux Software, <info@acruxsoft.com>
Acrux Software, a provider of Macintosh educational software and courseware, today announced the availability of a public beta test of version 4 of the "Teach!" software: a Mac-only multi-media authoring toolkit specifically designed for the education community.
Changes from version 3:
* Pop-up palettes: in order to help keep the screen uncluttered, but at the same time give access as many palettes as required, "pop-up" palettes have been implemented, and these work very much like the pop-up windows in Mac OS 8.
* On-line guides: utilizing the pop-up palettes, much improved on-line guides have been implemented. These guide work just like Teach! courses (in user mode). So there's now no need to switch back and forth between design mode and user mode to access help information; it's all available whilst the program is in design mode.
* Tips: context sensitive tips can be optionally given when designing courses
* Improved memory management, enabling "thousands of colors" in most cases
* Customizable design palette - for those who prefer menus to buttons
* Full-screen presentation mode, with slide shows.
* Random testing: it's now possible to organize a test or a quiz so that the questions (pages) are presented in a random order.
* Browsable template palettes: instead of a separate palette for each template, you can now easily browse all the templates in a series (file).
* Many more minor improvements and bug-fixes
See <http://www.acruxsoft.com/teach/updates.html> for more details and screen shots.
The Teach! program is an imaginative, fresh new look at how to best utilize the power of the Apple Macintosh for educational purposes. It's all about using and creating courseware for learning - talking books, quizzes, questionnaires, surveys, tutorials, full "electronic textbooks", or just fun multi-media presentations. And by combining synthesized speech, visual effects, sounds, movies and other multi-media elements, you can make courseware which is informative, compelling, engaging - in a nutshell: educational!
"Teach! Lite" is freely distributable "Lite" version of the software, which can be used to run all courses, and design and save courses of up to 25 pages.
Availability:
Teach! v4 will be available within the next few weeks directly from Acrux Software and through several US distributors.

Date: Fri, 6 Mar 1998 04:10:50 -0000 From: EvangeList <evangelist@apple.com> Subject: PR - FREE Funnel Web with WebTen
Keyword: Market by market, Internet
This announcement is from:
Anita Holmgren, <anita@tenon.com>
In a limited time special offer, Tenon Intersystems and Active Concepts have joined together to make Funnel Web, an advanced web analysis tool, a free add-on to WebTen, the fastest and most fully-featured Macintosh web server.
WebTen
WebTen 2.0 is an industrial-strength, high-performance Web server for Power Macs - a point & click Apache web server, with performance and features that, for the first time, put the Macintosh squarely on the internet playing field. WebTen, based on the latest Apache 1.2.5 and sustaining over 700 hits/second, includes multihoming SSL 3.0, multihoming FTP, NFS, and DNS. With Tenon's Macintosh extensions to Apache, WebTen supports the widest selection of plug-ins and CGIs of any web server.
WebTen includes built-in multihoming with its own finely tuned TCP stack. Alternatively, you can run WebTen with Apple's OpenTransport, or, if desired, run both Tenon's advanced TCP stack and OT in parallel, simultaneously. WebTen supports both IP-based virtual hosting or header-based virtual hosting. Using IP-based virtual hosting in combination with Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) 3.0 for Web-based commerce, provides the ability to support hundreds of secure Web addresses on a single Macintosh.
WebTen supports File Transfer Protocol (FTP) for uploading Web content. Using virtual hosting in combination FTP supports the secure uploading of Web content to specific virtual host directories. A built-in NFS capability supports the offloading of Web content throughout the enterprise via industry-standard file sharing. In addition, state-of-the-art Domain Name Service (DNS) has been included so that a WebTen Web server can also act as a primary or secondary domain name server.
FunnelWeb
Funnel Web 1.6 puts the power of Web analysis into the hand of people who need the information - editors, CEOs and managers. No longer do corporations need to employ programmers and software engineers to generate detailed Web reports. Funnel Web is a valuable tool for Internet Service Providers (ISPs), giving them the ability to generate detailed billing and usage statistics for clients. Educators can use it to monitor students progress and online curricula. Business managers can use it to monitor market penetration and effectiveness.
Funnel Web not only provides detailed information about the effectiveness of a Web site, but also diagnoses potential problems and pinpoints hotspots. Through its unique and intuitive user interface, Funnel Web removes the difficulty of analyzing web traffic. It eliminates the need to decipher and edit complex configuration files or to know the format of log files. Simple to use, more powerful than its predecessors, and twice as fast as any other commercial Web processing tool.
WebTen & Funnel Web: Advanced Web Service and Advanced Web Analysis
For a limited time, Tenon will include a free Funnel Web with the purchase of WebTen. Simply purchase WebTen and redeem the included Funnel Web coupon (US $199.95 value) from Active Concepts. WebTen is US $495.
