This request is from:
Paul N. Schatz, <pns@virginia.edu>
I have a friend who has a large, and very valuable collection of data stored in a graphical database program called FileVision IV (from TSP software). The company has gone out of business, and the program hasn't been updated since 1990. He would like to transfer the pictures and data from this program to another but knows of no comparable database program. Since FileVision allows one to create graphics (like maps) and attach information to each object, he would like to have a program that did something similar, and into which he could easily transfer the FileVision data. Could anyone recommend such a piece of software?

This request is from:
<triad@calpha.com>
I have been approached by someone in far East Texas who is setting up a video service for non-profit organizations. She has asked for information about cameras, editing equipment, etc. Someone from Lubbock has told her that a beta unit would be $100,000.+. If anyone has information, please send via e-mail to <triad@calpha.com>. My Macs have been the workhorses of this firm for over 10 years, so I want to be sure I give her the very best advice. Thanks very much for any help the Evangelistas send.
On February 13, 1998, Macrobyte Resources released PrePress AutoTools, a workflow automation tool for a busy prepress environment.
As an introductory promotion, we're offering PrePress AutoTools for $189 for the first three months. That's a savings of $100 off of the regular price of $289. Also, there's a fully functional, but time-limited, trial version on our website.
As an added incentive to try our new software, Macrobye is offering an additional $20 discount to the Evangelistas only, making the final price $169. This offer only lasts until March 20, 1998, after which the special "Evangelist Registration Page" will be removed.
You'll find more information about PrePress AutoTools here:
The following is the announcement that was released on February 13, which explains a little about AutoTools:
PrePress AutoTools is a commercial Macintosh application for batch processing QuarkXPress files.
The main function of AutoTools is the conversion of XPress files to PostScript, as quickly as possible.
This isn't just about PostScript, though! There are lots of other features for a busy PrePress environment. All of the following features can be performed at the same time, or separately:
o Looks for, reports, and fixes spot colors (converts to process) according to the user's specifications o 'Image relinking', which helps when processing jobs from someone else's computer. o Run a set of *extendible* filter scripts on every document, at three different points in the workflow! o Many, many more features, all performed at the same time during a batch run. It's fast!
There are other tools included in the AutoTools application, also. For example, there's a "job sorting" feature which will sort an 'incoming' disk or folder TO your server, copying and sorting the files in one quick step.
Read more about this new software here:
<http://www.macrobyteresources.com/autotools/>
If you have any questions or comments on AutoTools, feel free to contact me directly. I'm always happy to answer any questions you might have!
Found an amusing web page today, the "Operating System Sucks-Rules-O-Meter" at:
<http://electriclichen.com/linux/srom.html>
The page's description states:
"This operating system quality and approval metric is based on a periodic Alta Vista search for each of the 4 products above directly followed by the word "sucks" or the word "rules." Please bookmark this page and return to note the growing "Linux rules" consensus in the OS market."
Perhaps if more of the Mac web pages that Alta Vista can find included the text "MacOS rules" then we'd note a growing consensus for *our* favorite OS too!

Date: Wed, 4 Mar 1998 02:11:13 -0000 From: EvangeList <evangelist@apple.com> Subject: ?? - Substitute for "Jenny"
This request is from:
Rina and Steven Glickman, <rina@teleport.com>
I am a graduate student and one of the courses I'm going to have to take for my program is research methods. One of the requirements for the class is to do statistical analysis using a DOS program called "Jenny." Students who use PC's can simply download the program to use at home. Unfortunately ;), I use a Mac so that option isn't available to me. Aside from the obvious solution of buying Virtual PC, I know there has to be some program that can do what Jenny does but on a Mac. Frankly, my experience has shown that anything that can be done on a PC can be done better on a Mac, even with the same program, and I'd rather lose a finger than drive up to campus to use a DOS program.
So, if anyone is familiar with that program and can suggest a Mac alternative, their help on this would be greatly appreciated.

This job announcement is from:
Eric Smith, <cbeyond!esmith@zool.interaccess.com>
Prepress/Print CSR and Mac Operator (Chicago - West)
Cutting edge prepress facility in western suburbs is interviewing for Customer Service and electronic assembly positions. Our growth and imminent entry into the premium quality print market has created the need for additional highly qualified people.
CSR Production Manager You're a focused and detail driven manager. Customer satisfaction isn't a buzzword, its what you live for. Your experience at juggling multiple projects as well as delegating work to others will be required in this busy position. You build strong, team relationships but aren't afraid to politely lean on those who don't keep up with the program. Serious, long term experience in the print/prepress business and managing people is absolutely required. Familiarity with computer based order entry and scheduling software is useful. But so is flexibility to deal with the constant changes in the graphics market.
Electronic Assembly 90% Mac/10% the other platform, (sorry, customers dictate) start-to-finish production. You know how to take a disk, then return with perfect film ready for proofing. Elaborate layouts from Quark Xpress, Freehand, Illustrator, and PageMaker as well as ordinary 4 color work are no match for your proven capabilities. Most of all you have a great attitude about keeping up with the constant flow of short turnaround work and the almost daily changes in software and systems we use. Previous prepress experience required, film stripping experience a plus. Day or evening shift option. Periodic overtime is required.
If you're interested in a position that will challenge you on a regular basis send a resume to <esmith@interaccess.com>. You'll have a chance to work at a company that values innovation, ambition and growth.

Date: Wed, 4 Mar 1998 02:11:18 -0000 From: EvangeList <evangelist@apple.com> Subject: $$ - Free Desktop Images for Evangelists
Austin Visual Magic, <avm@inetport.com>
Austin Visual Magic has just added over a hundred high quality desktop images to our web site. There are over 60 underwater scenes and tropical fish portraits, as well as shots ranging from racing motorcycles to rockets to Caribbean beaches. These images were all taken on professional slide film, scanned at 2700 dpi, and color corrected specifically for Macintosh systems.
The image files are large (they are uncompressed 32 bit files), so I deliver them on custom CD-ROMs. The CD includes each image in four sizes up to 1152 x 870, for the highest possible quality regardless of monitor size and resolution.
I have a special offer for my fellow Evangelists: With the purchase of 10 or more images from my web site, <http://www.austin-visual-magic.com>, I will include another 5 of your choice for free. Just put the words "Evangelist discount" in the "Instructions" field of the order form.
*** Be sure to check out our site for the free desktop image of the month. ***
I did all development, including slide scanning and color correction, web site design and creation, and cgi-bin code, on my Power Macintosh 8500 (128MB RAM and 5GB hard drive).
Sincerely,
Eric Marsh Austin Visual Magic

Date: Wed, 4 Mar 1998 02:11:21 -0000 From: EvangeList <evangelist@apple.com> Subject: ?? - Mac Networking Trouble
This request is from:
Electronic Viking, <ornstead@apple.com>
I have a brother working in MIS at Cal State Fullerton. Although they are predominantly a Wintel shop, they do have some macs. However, they have been having sporadic network problems with the macs which are influencing them to think again about having any macs on campus. Below is his description of the problem:
"My boss' boss' boss just came down & asked me personally to look into the mac problem. Specifically, several macs on campus have very flaky network connections. They'll be fine sometimes. Othertimes they won't see certain devices on the network (printers {apple}, servers {novell & >NT}). I've checked all the usual (swap cable, zap pram, rebuild desktop, clean install of system software, reformat hard drive & reinstall >everything etc) & nothing fixes the problem for more than a couple days (may be coincidental that anything fixes it at all - may just be that the fading in/fading out cycle happened to be "in" just then). My best guess is that certain types of hubs, cables, switches etc just aren't happy with Apple equipment or with appletalk. It happens on 6100, 4400, 7200 & others. It happens with system 7.5.1, 7.5.3, 8.0 etc"
If anyone has any advice on how to fix this problem, please send it to me, Enoch Ornstead, at <ornstead@apple.com>. Please include "Mac Networking" somewhere in the subject so that I can set up a filter in Claris Emailer to handle the replies. I will forward all useful replies to my brother.
