Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Hello this is a test. How are U Bawb SpiderJose: Hello Bob! Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Good Morning! SpiderChris: morning! Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Hey! SpiderJose: Good Morning, Bob! Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Its almost lunch time for me now. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Can we talk about server crashes before everyone else gets here? SpiderJose: Yes...when are you experiencing the crashes? Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: MacsBug 6.5.3, © Apple Computer, Inc. 1981-96Bus Error at 000249B8 Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: I had two in a row this morning. I wasn't present but have the std logs rusty: Bob is running system 7.5 on a AV Generation quadra rusty: There is a conflict in the syetm s.w with those macs rusty: You need to run system 7.1, I don't know if 7.6 fixes the problem. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Boy I hate to go back. Wasn't to much trouble before b9 and b10. rusty: The system starts up with a Bad Heap -- this will cause the system to crash unpredictably. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: If I run 7.1 can I keep the modern TCP? rusty: this is the siganture> SpiderJose: nope rusty: The heap at 000021D0 is bad Block length is bad Block header 00002E84 0000 0000 0000 02D0 B6DB 6DB6 DB6D B6DB ¥¥¥¥¥¥¥Ð¶¥m¶¥m¶¥ SpiderJose: OT only works on 7.5.3 or greater Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: My alternatives then are to buy a newer processor because I don't think I can run 7.1 again with the system configured the way I want it. rusty: Reboot your mac, and then go into macsbug, and you'll see that even before you run any applications. rusty: Why do you need 7.5? Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: To run a decent version of TCP. rusty: You don;t have a PPP conenction do you? Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Yes I have a dedicated 33.6 to my ISP using PPP. rusty: Chris says that OT PPP is better than FreePPP thos. rusty: I find that our Qudra 700 running 7.5 and MacTCP is far more stable than our PM running OT. There are still bugs in OT. rusty: its a trade off situation. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: I understand. I have been considering a motherboard swap for a 7100-80 which will fit my box, use my ram and my cards. Is that a solution? rusty: I don't think the x100 series are very stable macs. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: That has been my observation as well. I run 6100s and 7100 here at work. SpiderJose: Hi 'Your Name'! rusty: 1st Gen machines like that are always suspect. rusty: I'd give 7.6 a try Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Well I don't have the cash to move up to the later series equipment. It would force me to buy dimms, and a new serial port card. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: rusty: It seems to be a big improvement. rusty: I'd check out a Q950 then Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: I can check it with Macsbugs then to see if the heap error is still occuring? rusty: yep, just type "HC" rusty: you'll need Macsbugs 6.5.4 a1 rusty: thats the only version that runs on 7.6 rusty: Hi Mikael Mikael Fredriksson: HI! SpiderChris: hi mikael SpiderJose: Hello Mikael! rusty: I heard on the radio today that its a special day in Sweden. Mikael Fredriksson: ?? rusty: Maybe it was yesterday rusty: Something about outdoor activities, could be a mistake. SpiderJose: Hi Bob W! SpiderChris: hello bob w Bob Wright: hello to all! :) Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Hello Bob Wright: Bob N, just the man I need to see ;-) Bob Wright: What is the scoop with MaxTF? I mean I know its not an official product of Spiderisland, but how do you get that search engine going? rusty: We don't have it running here. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: I never ran it full time since I had trouble with it. I just use it like a utility. Bob Wright: ahh...if it only came with some help docs. I like the online assistance aspect of it, but I cant figure out how to make it search for the document Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: The conference repair and kill duplicating messages make it worthwhile. Bob Wright: its great for kids to type "help email' and then they get a document about how to send email. That would be very beneficial to the kids Bob Wright: yeah, I had a lot of conferences to repair ;() rusty: TF 5.5b10 will repair Conferences itself now Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: I had a much improved group of help files written to go with it. I even set up aliases for typos but I couldn't ever get it to run stable. Bob Wright: is that auto, rusty? rusty: If the link is broken it will look for the ¥folder in the same folder as the topic and link itself to it. Bob Wright: where did you put the help files so they could be accessed? rusty: Chris had that in mail server already, so we added it to TF Server. rusty: It happens at the moment a user accesses a broken topic. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: In the help folder that came with it. I can mail you my set if you want to keep messing with it Bob Wright: rusty: what about duplicate messages? rusty: What duplicate messages? Bob Wright: Bob N: I did not get a help folder. Sure, send me what you have and I will play with it. Bob Wright: Rusty: will it repair duplicate messages Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: If you run newsgroups you would understand Bob Wright: The NNTP server I get news from often times sends me duplicate messages rusty: oh, you mean from SUCKER? Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Yup Bob Wright: yes, rusty: Its a sucker problem. rusty: It does gets the message multiple times, but does not modifiy the header so that we know where to put a specific copy. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Yup but thats what makes Max TF useful. Even if you don't leave it up. It hunts them all down and kills them. Are you going to build a Net Sucker? Bob Wright: well, are there plans to have a "better" nntp server for TF? rusty: So each copy looks like it needs to go to all of the x-posted topics. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: I would rather send you money for one that worked. rusty: Thats probably the best thing to do, build a decent gateway. rusty: :) rusty: $$$$$$$$ rusty: or rusty: $$ ? Bob Wright: oh no, he's become Bill Gates ;-) rusty: no I didn't say Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: $50 for one that worked rusty: $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$! rusty: and your soul? Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: $50 a head for everyone that uses a sucker. I think most people would pay that. rusty: Sounds pretty good. rusty: How many suckers are there? Bob Wright: I'd pay to have something that works! :) rusty: :) Bob Wright: hah Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Quite a few of us. How many do you think sent $10 to whatsisname rusty: not enuf Bob Wright: he's has my shareware fee Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: That probably right. rusty: not enough for someone to pick up the ball and make sucker better Bob Wright: except after paying I found out he was doing missionary work or something so the product has not been improved for almost 1.5 years now rusty: what about the MacKennel news gate? Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Cmon Chris you could knock out one in a few hours huh?? rusty: I think Craig finally unbundled it from the rest of Kennel... Bob Wright: why is my geektalk speaking words which are not being typed right now? Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Mine is still saying Rustys $$$ strings SpiderChris: hehe rusty: server crashed here Bob Wright: there, that's better. Bob Wright: Chris: the car is still broken, eh? SpiderChris: bob, nah.... i keep putting off brining my bike home ;-) Bob Wright: Chris: I just sold my Jeep this week. I should have drove it out to Claif and let you purchase it ;) Bob Wright: claif = calif SpiderChris: haha bob... nah, i think i'm in the mood for something else anyway ;-) SpiderChris: what kinda jeep? Bob Wright: Chris: yep, I understand. That 's why I sold it...I wanted a 4x4. I had a Jeep Chrokee 1994 with 23k miles Bob Wright: Jose": hahaha...do they work for the LAPD? ;-) Bob Wright: Do you guys see what is sittng beind me over my left shoulder? Its the 8550!!!!!! 8-) SpiderJose: LAPD? Don't you mean PALD? Bob Wright: LAPD...PALD...PETA...its all the smae ;) SpiderChris: cool bob SpiderJose: =) Bob Wright: it just arrived about an hour ago :-) Bob Wright: looks like I will be calling JOse next week when I make the changes ;-) rusty: we should have server b11 today, with just minor updates rusty: mainly cosmetic rusty: + one more command that shows active web requests rusty: We've kicked around a scheme that would make it easy to run multiple servers for your site. Bob Wright: now that sounds interesting rusty: TF's SPML would distribute requests to a predefined list of servers rusty: Kind of a load balancing scheme, but you'd have more control over wich requests are distributed. rusty: You'd write your links like: rusty: Bob Wright: I dont see that under web settings....it must be a later version that I have? rusty: Its in b9 and 10 Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Works good that way. We have mapped some of our graphics frm our NT box. Bob Wright: I am still on 5.1.3a Bob Wright: I knew the 8550 was coming so I never messed with trying to keep the server up to date right now rusty: Dir Mapping is really nice rusty: It frees you from needing to keep all of your files in the "Web Space" (Home) folder. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Boy are you going to have to catch up fast. The newer version really does change things for the better. rusty: You can now get files from separate folders, CDs or File Servers. Bob Wright: yes, I like that feature. I will have to play with that next week once I get the 8550 going Bob Wright: that's why I have been coming here on Fridays so I can still "keep up" even though I am not actually upgrading Bob Wright: next friday I hoe to be runing the latest versions 8-) (and not have any new grey hairs) ;-) Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: They probably will just fall out rusty: Sounds good! Bob Wright: haha...I hear ya, BobN ;) Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: I moved my to a 2.1 gig Empire drive and added a 3.2 file drive. It never goes like you think. Its good when you get there though. rusty: Any last Q's before we wrap up for today? Bob Wright: I have made the mistake of never writing things down so I know something is not going to work right away when I make the move Bob Wright: question? Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: How soon?? When we upgrade our TF users here at Wangs it takes a while. Should I put 3.0b11 on them this weekend or what a while?? Bob Wright: yeah, make sure you ave available 24 hours a day next week to help me ;-() rusty: I'm still getting reports of the "Info" window hanging in b11. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Bob Wright - give me your email address. Bob Wright: Bob N: rwright@pps.k12.va.us rusty: I can't reproduce it tho Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: I think I ll move my power users over anyway and leave the rest on b8 rusty: That is the only outstanding bug report I have in 3.0 for Win Bob Wright: I am glad you told me about dir mapping. NOw I can run the card catalog from a seperate machine Bob Wright: Rusty: here is a little info which might interest you: Bob Wright: Rusty: starting next week, i am going to be teaching students HTML via email using TF :-) They will learn how to create html files and put them onto the TF server using their web space rusty: Very Cool! Bob Wright: :) Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: If you guys are out on the net look at my improved frames site: http://www.headgap.com Bye now! Bob Wright: I even have some teahers signed up for the "class" .....I'd like to sit at home and teach it one day ;-() rusty: If you want to, we can setup a chat for your class some time SpiderJose: Bye Bob N! Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: By and thanks!
