Michael Davidson: hi Donald
Donald McHose: Hey Mon , I think that RT is not going to make the Tues. chats for a while. He said he would try to make the Thurs.. night ones though. How are you doing ?

Michael Davidson: Fine, do you mean Tues. chats
Michael Davidson: What time are the Thursday ones, it's been too long.
Donald McHose: ahhh..yea ;-) too much caffeine today.

Michael Davidson: :)
Donald McHose: I think they are ...9 ish in the pm for us eastern folks.
Donald McHose: I'll check
Michael Davidson: would that be 6pm Pacific?
Donald McHose: here go & yes that is 6 pm pac.
--------
The support chat is held in the "Chat Room" on the Spider Island BBS on Tuesdays at 11 am PST, and Thursdays at 6 pm PST. We cover it all from Modems, ISPs, TeleFinder Setup, and HTML tricks.
Michael Davidson: Thanks!
Michael Davidson: how well have the chats been attended lately???
Michael Davidson: I haven't had time enough to even read the logs...I have to find more time somehow :/
Michael Davidson: Don, would you happen to be using a Hustler or Hurdler cards?
Donald McHose: NOT TOO GOOD! Well not all that bad either.More or less, 2 or three sysops bragging or dragging URLS to the latest and greatest Rumor mill areas.
Michael Davidson: :)
Donald McHose: 2 Port Hurdler I believe.

Michael Davidson: Hurdlers are 4 port...
Michael Davidson: In what machine?
Donald McHose: Haven't had it up in a year tho.O.K Hustler...WGS 8150
Donald McHose: 110 MHz NuBus
Donald McHose: need it ?

Michael Davidson: o, I am worried about the software not working with 8.1 on a 7100, but since you don't use it......
Michael Davidson: need what, the 8100?
Michael Davidson: I'd love to have a 8100, but I have settled for a 7100 for the server, for now
Donald McHose: No ..the Hustler ;-)
Michael Davidson: No, I have 5 or 6
Donald McHose: I'll be more and happy to send it to ya when ever I can upgrade to a new & Blue
Donald McHose: The 8150
Donald McHose: Have you checked with creative?
Michael Davidson: WOW, I'll pester ya about it in a few months maybe
Michael Davidson: Yes, but their web site is less than informative....I guess I'll just assume it'll work
Donald McHose: I wonder if there is a problem with OS 8.0.
Michael Davidson: me too, butt I"ll ASSume their isn't
Donald McHose: These cards tie up alot of $ for guess work.I'll get on the horn myself just for " because its the right thing to do ".
Donald McHose: If I find anything diff. I'll get a hold of you.
Michael Davidson: Yeah, I have so much invested in Hustler's, I need to keep with NuBus Macs, the 8100 being the best of the lot
Michael Davidson: davidsonm@phoney.com
Donald McHose: I think Bob Nunn is running a card also.
Michael Davidson: I thought he might be, and I thought he might be here today
Michael Davidson: Has Jim Smith been around (Lollipop maker)
Donald McHose: He might be.Never have known him to miss one.But RT did post that he would not make this chat so who knows.
Michael Davidson: Yeah, he probably skipped this one then.
Michael Davidson: Anybody been doing any Applescripting for TF lately?
Donald McHose: Well Bob is good about answering his e-notes:
Headgap@headgap.com
Michael Davidson: he should be head@headgap.com
Michael Davidson: :)
Donald McHose: I don't think so ..not lately.
Michael Davidson: Are you subbing for RT for this session?
Michael Davidson: or just here as a sysop?
Donald McHose: Actually things have been real quite.
Oh..no I can't sub for Rusty and don't qualify right now as a sysop.
Donald McHose: We got taken off-line four months ago.
Michael Davidson: Don't qualify for a sysop??
Michael Davidson: why, was it a dumb business decision?
Donald McHose: Hoping to be back up in a month if all goes well.
Donald McHose: No originally a k-12 system
Donald McHose: set up and paid for by volunteers
Michael Davidson: That's right, you do edu
Michael Davidson: Hope you get back up...are the students complaining?
Donald McHose: The new school guru said NOT NT! NOT HERE ! Now they have nuthin.Oh well.yeah they complain but there is nothing they can do.
Donald McHose: I am trying to go county wide thru grants.
Michael Davidson: Public school bureaucracy...what a pain
Donald McHose: Did a talk with a foundation " aging" Friday looks good.
Donald McHose: I have said I don't do EDU no more ;-)
Michael Davidson: Cool, it shouldn't take that much money to keep a TF system running
Donald McHose: Not at all...the system is really cool when ya get down to it.
Michael Davidson: Although, of course,t he sysop will not make the money he deserves.
Donald McHose: I am begging for a 128k line at first...and put in enough for 2 new servers.
Donald McHose: I never went for the bucks. But it has been in the back of my mind I'll tell ya.
Jim DeHaven: hi--I guess the chat isn't happening
Michael Davidson: A strong line, a good Mac or two, and a dedicated staff... it can work
Michael Davidson: Good luck with the grants/donations Donald
Donald McHose: No one does any interactivity in out area. Yeah that's the ticket..Hey JIMBO!
Michael Davidson: Hi Bob...
Bob Nunn: Hey Howsit...
Michael Davidson: Bob, do you use Hustlers
Jim DeHaven: hi Don and hello all
Bob Nunn: I think mine is called a hurdler
Michael Davidson: using 8.5, no probs?
Michael Davidson: using CSI 1.0.5?
Bob Nunn: Yep but I also have the later version of the software on it.
Bob Nunn: I think so would have to look.
Michael Davidson: And what version is that, and where did you get it
Bob Nunn: I got it from them. Its been a while.
Michael Davidson: from the CSI web site? they don't even mention 8.5
Donald McHose: Himmmm..I think you had to pay for the latest upgrade.
Donald McHose: A token or sumthin
Michael Davidson: No mention of that either
Bob Nunn: I did. But I also put it up in my sysops tools area for download....
Bob Nunn: They didn't seem concerned about it. Since the only reason they were charging was to handles costs or so they said. I didn't understand why they didn't put it up but they aren't really web savvy are they.
Michael Davidson: Bob, could I trouble you to find out what version it is?
Bob Nunn: If you give me a sec I will go to my ud via NetScape and check.
Michael Davidson: Can I get into the sysops area of your website?
Bob Nunn: Yep just enter the web bbs area and use a logon as guest unless u already have access.
Michael Davidson: It's been awhile, but I'll try to remember my password...:)
Donald McHose: Sheeees here comes trouble " Boss " with an attitude and the NRC in tow.Gots to run bye!
Bob Nunn: guest with no password works
Bob Nunn: CSI serial installer 1.05 in TeleFinder Tools/Sysop Utils
Ken Sutherland: hiya all
Bob Nunn: Heya
Michael Davidson: That one is on their website
Michael Davidson: Hi Ken
Michael Davidson: Thanks Bob
Bob Nunn: Its the one I have been using. Works okay for me.
Michael Davidson: Long time no see you guys
Ken Sutherland: snap
Michael Davidson: If it works for you with 8.5, it should work for me with 8.1
Michael Davidson: :)
Bob Nunn: Yep, can't remember but I had to change from the .94 beta when I update I think it was 7.6 but not sure.
Bob Nunn: I used it a good long while with 8.1 I usually am a fairly early adopter on OS's
Michael Davidson: I've been using the 105 for sometime, but I just wanted to make sure.
Michael Davidson: I noticed that bob.
Bob Nunn: On ancillary stuff like that I don't change unless it gets broke, or perhaps some major performance gain is promised.
Michael Davidson: What machine do u use that has the NuBus slot?
Bob Nunn: I really like 8.5, it has really stabilized my 81/110 Radius
Michael Davidson: Any probs with Lollipop?
Bob Nunn: And now that I used my Leaf Blower to clean out the housing things are great.
Michael Davidson: Maybe I'll go up to 8.5 instead of 8.1, I've been worried about the Hustler cards
Michael Davidson: I read about the leaf blower....wow
Bob Nunn: Yep, I take down most of the Amiga groups and one of the newsgroups had something in it that was killing Lolli
Bob Nunn: I finally figured out what the group name was and deleted it from sucking. It is all working good now.
Michael Davidson: Jim Smith been around these Chats lately?
Bob Nunn: Hadn't seen him on in weeks. Hope he is doing okay.
Michael Davidson: (obviously, I haven't been around)
Bob Nunn: He was working on that Address Book program he got. That's been a few chats back though.
Michael Davidson: So, Bob, I'm moving up (believe it or not) my server to a 7100. Do you think 8.1 or 8.5 would be best
Michael Davidson: Is 8.5 that much more stable?
Bob Nunn: I think 8.5 would.. My daughters 7100 is working great with it. Yes. OT 2.1 is worth any minor problems.
Michael Davidson: OT would be my main motivation.
Bob Nunn: I have seen good transfer rate improvements etc. It also seems to handle multiple tasks better, like newsgroup sucking etc.
Michael Davidson: Thanks for the info Bob, I think you have made up my mind. 8.5 it will be (moving from 7.6.1)
Bob Nunn: Be careful and update your hard drive drivers properly. You can kill a drive if you don't
Michael Davidson: If I'm going to go thru the hassle of upgrading and tweaking, might as well go all the way.
Michael Davidson: For sure bob on the drivers
Ken Sutherland: also buy the latest Norton
Bob Nunn: Something odd about 8.5. My guess is that is what got a few people. 8.5.1 is up and there is a new Apple Drive Util. Make sure you get the latest.
Bob Nunn: Ditto on Norton and the free update.
Michael Davidson: I don't have the latest Norton, do I need it?
Bob Nunn: Yep have to.
Michael Davidson: Free update on Norton. I have 3.5
Ken Sutherland: I lost my entire bbs
Bob Nunn: That was my biggest holdup on adopting HFS+ also. That'll fix all of it. Nope you need a legit 4.0 CD with the 4.01 updater. I killed a drive here at work.
Michael Davidson: And would be using Silverling 5.8.3 and HDT 3.0
Michael Davidson: I don't want HFS+
Michael Davidson: Is HFS+ a 8.5 NECESSITY?
Ken Sutherland: no
Bob Nunn: Nope. Still have mine mixed but am soon to convert the rest.
Jim DeHaven: see ya--sorry for being silent--the boss just showed up
Michael Davidson: So, Norton 3.5 isn't adequate with 8.5 even if not using HFS+
Michael Davidson: bye Jim
Bob Nunn: You will need Norton 4 for sure. Would recommend it even using 8.1
Michael Davidson: Shoot, I hate sending Symantec money.
Bob Nunn: I made up a boot zip from the CD. \
Michael Davidson: Hey, I have a general question. Are you guys using NAV (v5.0)?
Bob Nunn: Nope, Worm Gobbler is all I use anymore.
Michael Davidson: Something is slowing down my server and I suspect it is NAV checking every new file being created/modified.
Bob Nunn: Yup not worth it.
Michael Davidson: do you feel safe with just worm gobbler
Michael Davidson: Hey Bob, as usual, you've been a real help. I appreciate it.
Bob Nunn: Let me know if you need anything else. Send me your buffer of the log if you can headgap@headgap.com Thanks Bye Have to go.
Michael Davidson: bye
