Text of TeleFinder Chat from Tuesday, January 27, 1998 11 AM PST.

In attendance:

From Spider Island: Rusty Tucker,

Sysops: ewik, Jim Smith, Michael Davidson, Bob Wright, Ken Sutherland, mikael fredriksson, Bob Nunn, Donald McHose, Bill Gram-Reefer

ewik: hello

Jim Smith: Hi

ewik: hmm

ewik: its slow

Michael Davidson: Hi Jim

Jim Smith: Hi

Jim Smith: SI now on ISDN.

Michael Davidson: I wasn't able to...and I couldn't get on last Tues because I had used up all my time trying to dload the 5.6, still haven't successfully dloaded it yet

Michael Davidson: Hey, I have printed out your registration for MailToFile, but haven't sent it with my check yet. Did you get my MailToFile description?

Jim Smith: Make sure you use one of the Zmodem

Bob Wright: Greetings to all!

Jim Smith: DON'T send me check, I will send you key, you did most of the leg work on Popcicle (MailToFile).

ewik: hi

Michael Davidson: I have, but have had much trouble with it too. I have had to trash a bunch of partially dloaded files (some as big as 16MB)....I don't know why it is corrupting the file on partial dloads

Michael Davidson: Hi Bob, ewik

Michael Davidson: O, but it is worth $10 to me for sure (that's cheap). Also, I am thinking of going with Lollipop too

ewik: what is Popcicle?

Michael Davidson: Did you get my description in the email for MailToFile...I sent it last week after we talked in one of these SI chats

Jim Smith: Popcicle is used DL POP3 email.

Jim Smith: MD: yes and have put it in new Popcicle up load.

Michael Davidson: Is Rusty going to be here today?

Michael Davidson: Is that on SI now (what's it called?)

ewik: ah

Michael Davidson: Does anybody here use TF over a network...that is, are clients calling your bbs over AppleTalk?

Michael Davidson: Hey KEN!

Donald McHose: tcp/ip

Bob Wright: gotta run

Ken Sutherland: Greetings

Michael Davidson: Ken, do you have clients that connect to TF Server over AppleTalk

Ken Sutherland: me

Michael Davidson: But then, you must also have a full time , non TCP internet connection Donald

Ken Sutherland: netconnect

Michael Davidson: net connect, the old software from SI?

Ken Sutherland: yup, nothing better, beats the ass out of ADSP

Ken Sutherland: 130k downloads via network

Michael Davidson: Can we still get it?

Jim Smith: I have been playing with local net connection.

Ken Sutherland: ask rusty

Michael Davidson: The current MacOS system has the following problem: only one type of TCP/IP connection can be selected at each moment. So if your TF Server computer uses a PPP link, it cannot use your LAN for TCP/IP, and you cannot use TCP-based mailers with the Server.

Ken Sutherland: i asked him to include it in the next server release

Ken Sutherland: he used to charge around$100 i think

Ken Sutherland: but that was 5 years ago

Michael Davidson: Yeah, I haven't seen that in years

Ken Sutherland: correct

Ken Sutherland: you need to use VIG on another mac

Michael Davidson: So, I am trying to get around this...I have a way, but I'm not sure Rusty will go for it

ewik: I have a question about HDS mail

Ken Sutherland: i had tcp setup for ppp and accessed via netconnect

Michael Davidson: Does OT 1.3 correct the above problem or not

Ken Sutherland: ewik, ask away

Michael Davidson: That might work too, but I need to go by way of ADSP (hopefully)

Ken Sutherland: het bob, hiya

ewik: I want it to default to table view

Bob Nunn: Hey,

Ken Sutherland: that also works fine for me

Michael Davidson: But I don't want my clients to have to use TF/User for email

Ken Sutherland: ewik, you may not be able to, bob have you tried this

Michael Davidson: Hi Bob

Donald McHose: KS: thanx,HDS up / oats still waiting for a close encounter with the server.

Ken Sutherland: then you have no other choice but to use VIG on another mac, sorry but it is a limit

ewik: also I have put the link to mail in side a realm is there a way to take the name and password from the realm and skip the login?

Ken Sutherland: can you get another bbs to act as a tf-tf host for you

Ken Sutherland: we need to get tf sysops to start networking

Michael Davidson: maybe Ken on the tf-tf host thing, but I would rather not....maybe it's time to go with VIG

Ken Sutherland: bob, myself and Daniel from Klonezone are going to start a new net

Michael Davidson: Anybody selling VIG cheap today? :)

Ken Sutherland: VIG works for me

Ken Sutherland: have setup 6 systems for customers already

Michael Davidson: And it must be on a separate machine Ken?

Ken Sutherland: you need to remember the host mac running VIG has no tcp, only the network Macs

Michael Davidson: repeat of my question above: Does OT 1.3 correct the above problem or not...supposedly you can have more than one ip number

Rusty Tucker: hola!

ewik: hi

mikael fredriksson: hi

Michael Davidson: on those 6 systems you have setup Ken, you use VIG on separate machines?

Michael Davidson: Hi Rusty...I found out some more info on the ADSP of type RRPOP for using Claris Emailer...unfortunately, I think it is bad news

ewik: Rusty I am running the same Netopia router connected to my isp the have a script on their end that checks the connection every 2 minutes and re connects if it is down

Ken Sutherland: In the uk it costs £166 for 3 user license VIG 4.5 got released today

Ken Sutherland: now supports parental restrictions

Ken Sutherland: hi mikael

Ken Sutherland: lag lag lag

Michael Davidson: is that $200 Ken?

Ken Sutherland: wow, a 4 minutes lockup

Michael Davidson: >Actually, EMailer needs all three services on AppleTalk - POP, SMTP, and PWD.

>And when it shows AppleTalk servers, it shows PWD servers only.

Ken Sutherland: don't no, Rusty

Ken Sutherland: $250

Michael Davidson: Ok. Still, maybe that's the way to go

Ken Sutherland: think so

Michael Davidson: Rusty, any way you would spend your time getting Emailer to work over AppleTalk with your POP3 ADSP node, given the info above?? (it sure would be nice to have a high volume, full-featured, AppleScript aware email client for business users to use with TF Server)

Ken Sutherland: was speaking to 'Darco' the developer of VIG today with regards to Highlander supplying a plugin for them to allow user manager to act as host control

Michael Davidson: That would be extra nice Ken

ewik: any news on an FTP plug-in?

Ken Sutherland: ie radius

Ken Sutherland: nope

Ken Sutherland: February at the earliest

Michael Davidson: Yeah, highlander has gotten pretty good with User Manager

ewik: its in the works though?

Rusty Tucker: err

Michael Davidson: Rusty, was that your response to my question to you? :)

Rusty Tucker: no...

Michael Davidson: Or are you just frustrated

Ken Sutherland: brb

Ken Sutherland: Rusty, what are your thoughts regarding my request for the UM upgrade

Ken Sutherland: brb

Michael Davidson2: I got knocked off so I'm going to repeat myself (again):

Jim Smith: brb?

Michael Davidson2: Rusty, does OT 1.3 solve the MOS problem that only one type of TCP/IP connection can be selected at each moment. So if your TF Server computer uses a PPP link, it cannot use your LAN for TCP/IP, and you cannot use TCP-based mailers with the Server.

mikael fredriksson: I have uploaded FMPro Tuner.sit to Sysop Files :FMPro Tuner is a system extension for the Mac OS which dramatically improves the performance of FileMaker Pro 4.0 and 3.0. When used as a database host, FileMaker's service can slow down tragically, particularly if it is not the foreground application. FMPro Tuner patches FileMaker Pro to prevent this decrease in performance.

Michael Davidson2: sounds useful mikael

Rusty Tucker: ok back again

Rusty Tucker: No, 1.3 is single link only

Rusty Tucker: You need to choose PPP or LAN

Michael Davidson2: Ok, that's wherein my troubles lie

Bob Nunn: Thanks mikael, have had that problem a while.

Michael Davidson2: Rusty, when I was knocked off, did you answer my obnoxious question about Emailer?

Rusty Tucker: MD - did you find documentation on Emailer's AppleTalk interface?

Michael Davidson2: No, I got this info from stalker:>Actually, EMailer needs all three services on AppleTalk - POP, SMTP, and PWD.

>And when it shows AppleTalk servers, it shows PWD servers only.

Michael Davidson2: I can get their free SIMS software to work with Emailer

Rusty Tucker: Ken - I like that idea for the next UM

Bob Nunn: More control over web usage?

Rusty Tucker: ? I thought he meant the "auto message" controls

Rusty Tucker: Did I miss a new suggestions?

Bob Nunn: If you follow through with the Web BBS, the controls are a bit lacking. Encouraging participation is key to a BBS. Just a random thought.

Rusty Tucker: o i c

Rusty Tucker: Time limits and such are so counter to the web culture though..

Rusty Tucker: + damn hard to implement in an HTTP server.

mikael fredriksson: Maybe this is something for the OT problem. PNetRouter Features:

OT native IP Multihoming and routing.

A complete basic Internet toolkit (ping, traceroute, nslookup, whois).

Full Macintosh user interface makes these tools more accessible.

Superior integration. Automatically transfers corresponding data from one tool to another. Supports GURL Apple Event.

ewik: is there any way to have a user register via the web and have all the info put into a FMPro database and have UM create a new account

mikael fredriksson: http://www.sustworks.com/~psichel/

Michael Davidson2: I have a really dumb question: can a user accessing a POP3 node (by way of a POP3 client mail program) SEND email by way of the POP3 node?

Rusty Tucker: Ewik: You could probably work that using the File manager plug-in or CGI

Rusty Tucker: No, you can't send mail by POP3, only receive

ewik: no way with spml?

Rusty Tucker: or maybe Frontier too

Michael Davidson2: Ok, so it is a POP3 node only. Got it

Rusty Tucker: no spml doesn't have the ability to generate apple events.

Rusty Tucker: at least the type the File Maker needs,

Michael Davidson2: Mikael, is PNetRouter a software package...I've never heard of it

Rusty Tucker: it knows how to do the CGI apple event

mikael fredriksson: yes you can download a beta from http://www.sustworks.com/~psichel/

Ken Sutherland: kids for sale, various models ranging from 1 all the way up to 4, any offers considered

Rusty Tucker: Before the FM Pro CGI's came out, there were FM Pro apple scripts. A little slow, but you could use them.

Michael Davidson2: LOL Ken ....how bout for trade?

ewik: hmm I was looking for an easy way to do it. I am no good with scripting :(

Michael Davidson2: Thanks mikael

Rusty Tucker: Go with Lasso CGI then

Bob Nunn: ..

Rusty Tucker: Bob, did you get a log today?

Rusty Tucker: I was late, so mines incomplete

Bob Nunn: I was a few late so mine is as well but I can publish it unless someone has a better one?

Michael Davidson2: Hey Rusty, what has ever come of NetConnect?

Michael Davidson2: Jim was here

ewik: just selected it and saved it to text

Rusty Tucker: cool

ewik: done and sent

Bob Nunn: Would appreciate it. Will get it edited and up this evening. Thanks

Ken Sutherland: rusty, is HDS ok now

Michael Davidson: I'm back again :(

ewik: hmmm?

Bob Nunn: Bad lag for me finally dumped.

Ken Sutherland: rusty, all sysops need a 90 minutes session time

ewik: any thing that will do keyword search's of text files?

Ken Sutherland: yup

Ken Sutherland: and more

Michael Davidson: thanks Mikael, I'll look at their site (I think I got it before getting knocked off)

Ken Sutherland: name and cint

ewik: that would be cool

ewik: I have been using apple eg but I would like something different

Ken Sutherland: our uses UM for access

Bill Gram-Reefer: <<joined the chat>>

Bill Gram-Reefer: sorry for being so late

ewik: I have a rule book online that I need to be able to do word searches apple eg is not supported any more as far as I know

Ken Sutherland: how big in size

Ken Sutherland: anyone got shares in Digital??

ewik: the rule book is about 125 pages. every page is a text file

Ken Sutherland: shoot

Ken Sutherland: send me details

Ken Sutherland: bob the yo-yo

ewik: yea mostly whippet racing

ewik: but other breeds also

ewik: the new site is the one that uses the mail

Bob Nunn: Keep losing hook. Don't know why. Spinning beach ball my favorite.

Michael Davidson: Gotta go. See you all Friday. Bye

Ken Sutherland: ewik, a nice spin off of the search feature, anyone got comments or ideas?

Michael Davidson: <<left the chat>>

Bob Nunn: paranoid now... Guess I better call it a day and get back to work. ewik if you don't mind send my the pieces at the end I obviously missed.

Bob Nunn: headgap@headgap.com thanks. see you Friday.
