mikael fredriksson: <<joined the chat>>

Rusty Tucker: sounds like it will be there next tie you try

Rusty Tucker: Jon Paisley said he'd try to make it to the chat today

Rusty Tucker: I will be posting a new TF Server today.. it has the enhancements for maintaining a PPP link

mikael fredriksson: 5.62?

Rusty Tucker: it will reset itself 20 seconds after OT reports that the link has gone down

Rusty Tucker: 5.6.2b1 :)

Michael Davidson: <<joined the chat>>

Rusty Tucker: Does anyone use FreePPP w/ OT for their server?

Bob Nunn: And after I finally got rid of that problem, I did.

Michael Davidson: Hi guys

Michael Davidson: long time no see

Rusty Tucker: I've got TF User to respond to the loss of PPP very quickly too

Rusty Tucker: no more force quitting :)

Bob Nunn: brb

Bob Wright: <<joined the chat>>

Rusty Tucker: Hi Bob

Rusty Tucker: I don't have a list of equipment ready yet

Rusty Tucker: I need to look up some prices for the used Macs

Rusty Tucker: Does MacWeek still post a list?

Michael Davidson: www.uce.com

Bob Wright: RT: how hard would it be to send an IM to a user who requests your attention when you are downloading a file (eg. I am downloading a file and can not answer you right now.)?

Bob Wright: I mean the message is sent automatically :)

Rusty Tucker: not too hard, I'd probably make the"not available" during ZM xfrs though

Bob Wright: god idea...

Bob Wright: good ;)

Michael Davidson: Jim, how does MailToFile differ from Popsicle??

Jim Smith: None, Popsicle is a Reg. TM.

Rusty Tucker: how about "DomainMailer" ?

Jim Smith: BTW, just got a Power Key, they have a special for $59 to MacWay readers.

Michael Davidson: I knew that, but I didn't think that you would have trouble with the name, given the different nature of the products.

Michael Davidson: Popcicle would work too :)

Bob Nunn: Would seem like you could get away with renaming it slightly - Popcycle

Rusty Tucker: Doesn't seem to bother MS -- did you see their new "PalmPC"

Michael Davidson: cycle is pronounced different though, except in the south :)

Rusty Tucker: I think that 3Com will win that one

Michael Davidson: MS should be sued :)

Rusty Tucker: just heard a groaner

Bob Nunn: Want kind of bicycle do you ride?

Michael Davidson: Jim smith, what issue says that about Power Key..

Rusty Tucker: when Sonny Bono hit, the tree, how did they find him?

Rusty Tucker: "Sonny side up" :)

Michael Davidson: I was thinking motor cycle Bob ...but I got your point

Michael Davidson: :) RT

Rusty Tucker: Or -- "DomainPopper" ?

Jim Smith: MD: not sure, about 10 day ago I would say.

Michael Davidson: That's not bad Rusty

Jim Smith: MD: they have a special web page order page.

Bob Nunn: I love my Powerkey but for one thing. Wait till it recycles your power while you are running Norton.

Michael Davidson: Jim, I didn't get any more beta's. Is this popsicle (mailtofile) ready for real world???

Michael Davidson: give me the special web page order page Jim, if you would

Jim Smith: URL: http://www.sophisticated.com/evangelist.html - To take advantage of the special PowerKey offer, call

888-339-2232 and ask for the Evangelista Special. This offer is good until January 15th

Michael Davidson: Thanks Jim.

Rusty Tucker: or how about "PopGate" or "PopperGate" ?

Michael Davidson: I was using PopGate for my version Rusty :)

Michael Davidson: Rusty, I take it that you don't like "MailToFile" :)

Rusty Tucker: I don't think it is descriptive enough...

Michael Davidson: (my version uses free Emailer and applescript)

Bob Nunn: RT can you talk a bit about conferences and the counters.

Rusty Tucker: sure

Rusty Tucker: what counters?

Bob Nunn: I have some that for whatever reason are showing 0 messages but have 250 in the folder.

Rusty Tucker: OK

Jonathan Paisley: <<joined the chat>>

Rusty Tucker: that's because a prog removed the Message entry from the Topic index file, but couldn't or didn't delete the message that it referenced.

Jonathan Paisley: hi folks

Ken Sutherland: <<joined the chat>>

Rusty Tucker: It either happens during a trim, or add of a message when the topic's limit is reached.

Rusty Tucker: I have not seen a description yet under what circumstances the 2 get out of sync though

Bob Nunn: Hey Jon&Ken, Ok is there a way to force it to recount the messages?

Michael Davidson: Hi Jon

Jonathan Paisley: sorry, can someone fill me in on the topic here?

Rusty Tucker: no, those messages are orphaned

Rusty Tucker: they are supposed to be deleted, you presumably don't want them in the topic anymore

Michael Davidson: I wish the index file was easier to edit

Jim Smith: Rusty: if trimming and message not deleted is this reflected in the log?

Ken Sutherland: good evening all

Michael Davidson: Afternoon Ken

Bob Nunn: topic repair. I have had this happen sometime back and I just let them rebuild. This time though it was probably cause by a drive error. I had topics that I wanted to keep.

Rusty Tucker: JS - we need to find out when this bug occurs, and which program has the bug causing them to get out of sync

Jonathan Paisley: what's the bug?

Rusty Tucker: that messages are sometimes orphaned from a topic, when they should be deleted

Rusty Tucker: the message file remains in the topic folder.

Jonathan Paisley: hmmn.

Ken Sutherland: indeed

Jonathan Paisley: but we don't know what program is causing the problem?

Rusty Tucker: not yet

Michael Davidson: Bob, are u using OAT ?

Bob Nunn: I have heard that it only occurs on net subject but I have it in my regular local topics. Yes, I am using OAT.

Rusty Tucker: I have not seen the prob on our system

Bob Nunn: I also run Lollipop but that would only effect the newsgroups.. I restored my TF topics by downloading them from SI.

Michael Davidson: Is anybody seeing the problem who doesn't use OAT?

Jim Smith: I have also seen it in the FTnet conf.

Rusty Tucker: BN - that would likely rule out TF Server, but leave the possibility of mail server or another program that modifies the topic files.

Bob Nunn: If Norton changed the dates on items in the folder could that orphan them?

Rusty Tucker: nope

Bob Nunn: On my old system I had a repair topic program that would let you pick an individual topic to run it on. It would recount the messages.

Michael Davidson: Maybe if the index file could be easier to edit, when problems occur, we could fix them easier.

Ken Sutherland: good idea

Rusty Tucker: The fix is to simply delete those unused (old) message files

Bob Nunn: Where is the index file for the topic?

Rusty Tucker: you don't want to change the topic file ( the icon you see in tf-user)

Michael Davidson: brb

Bob Nunn: It takes resedit to really screw something up.

Jonathan Paisley: u can't resedit the topic files

Rusty Tucker: you just want to get rid of the message files that should have been deleted previously

Bob Nunn: Thanks, was going to look. I want them. The durn thing killed 200 messages that should have been current.

Rusty Tucker: the topic file refers to the messages by filename/directory id. the file mod date never enters into it.

Rusty Tucker: BN - oh, that's a different spin on the problem then.

Bob Nunn: I am sure it was my fault. Drive errors or something. Rebuilt and repair area. Can go to backup if I have to. But with conferences you never have everything current since they change quickly.

Rusty Tucker: BTW - did you all notice the new version of "Suzie"?

Jonathan Paisley: nope

mikael fredriksson: yes

Jonathan Paisley: where is it?

Rusty Tucker: It stays out of user's web space and pub folders when deleting old mail....

Rusty Tucker: sysop files

Rusty Tucker: /bbs utilities/

Bob Nunn: Is it still 68k?

Rusty Tucker: fat

Bob Nunn: cool :) should run in the background better now.

Bob Nunn: I think I can use the mail list features from oat to recover. Just set them up and drop the original messages in and let them import them. Was hoping for a repair by file util though.

Bob Nunn: repair by topic I should have said.

Ken Sutherland: got to go

Juan Jose Tarud: <<joined the chat>>

Ken Sutherland: <<left the chat>>

Juan Jose Tarud: Hola a todos!

Rusty Tucker: i don't think that will work.... i think the message files only contain the message body

Jonathan Paisley: bob: What specifically would you want a repair by topic to do?

Bob Nunn: Menu select individual topics. Re-read the folder and repost the valid files.

Rusty Tucker: Hola Juan

Jonathan Paisley: rusty: Isn't there an option in Mail Server (CINT) to tell it to store the info in the resource fork too?

Rusty Tucker: i think that its off by default.

Juan Jose Tarud: on a PC with a modem on COM 5 how do I configure TF?

Rusty Tucker: Should turn it on w/ OS 8.1

Jonathan Paisley: Yeah--adds an awful lot of space on the disk

Rusty Tucker: Move the mode to Com 1-4

Juan Jose Tarud: try with the 4 of them?

Juan Jose Tarud: or only 1 and 4

Rusty Tucker: any one of the 4

Juan Jose Tarud: thanx

Juan Jose Tarud: <<left the chat>>

Jonathan Paisley: bye folks

mikael fredriksson: RT: will the TF bbs be down this weekend when you move it?

Rusty Tucker: don't think I'm going to be able to move it this weekend

mikael fredriksson: next week?

Rusty Tucker: hopefully...

Rusty Tucker: I don't have an install date yet from netcom

Rusty Tucker: but the ISDN is partway in....

Rusty Tucker: but the wires don't reach the office yet :(

mikael fredriksson: ok

Jonathan Paisley: <<left the chat>>

Rusty Tucker: Any last q's before we end it for this week?

mikael fredriksson: nope, have a nice weekend!

Bob Nunn: Bye now!

Rusty Tucker: see you all next Tuesday!
