TeleFinder Chat from Tuesday, August, 1998 11 AM PDT.

In attendance:

From Spider Island: Rusty Tucker

Sysops: Rodolfo, Bob Nunn, Jim Leary, Andy Daws, Bill Gram-Reefer, mikael fredriksson

Rusty Tucker hola!
Jim Leary : good idea...hide the passwords from the sysop real secure...how bout real stupid
Andy Daws : Hi Rusty
Bill Gram-Reefer joined the chat.
Rusty Tucker Welcome to the chat Bill!
Jim Leary : I tried by changing the CINT 132 integer value from 1 to 0...didn't work
Rodolfo : Hi Rusty
Andy Daws : No the Sysop can change the password still
Rusty Tucker It does here JL
Rusty Tucker Hi Rodolfo
Jim Leary : I'm not there
Jim Leary : I know I can change the password...I have no desire to do so
Jim Leary : When a client hasn't been on for a while and forgets their password
Jim Leary : I can't tell them what it is...real professional
Rusty Tucker Didn't we have this exact same password discussion 3 months ago?
mikael fredriksson joined the chat.
Rusty Tucker Welcome to the chat mikael!
mikael fredriksson : Hi!
Jim Leary : a solution RT, not nonsense about what happened 3 months ago
Rusty Tucker It's all in the conferences online. You should check it out JL
Jim Leary : when I probably wasn't in the chat
Andy Daws : Its only for general browsing if someone just comes along and has a poke at your system
Jim Leary : I try to use my work time a bit more wisely since most of what goes on in the chat room is nonsense that doesn't apply to my needs
Andy Daws : But if you don't like it just change the CINT
Jim Leary : I come in to ask the "experts" when there's a problem
Jim Leary : to what?
Rusty Tucker :)
Jim Leary : I tried 0...doesn't work
Rusty Tucker Jim, why don't we handle this offline, OK?
Andy Daws : What is the CINT number Rusty haven't got here
Andy Daws : OK
Rusty Tucker Give me me a ring later this afternoon from your server, and have ResEdit handy
Rusty Tucker OK?
Jim Leary : I tried that...I asked the creator of TF and he couldn't find a solution...why RT is there something insignificant about updating the chats that you need to cover
Andy Daws : What's for discus today
Rusty Tucker We've got the new server out, getting very very close to release.
Jim Leary : Speaking of getting answers from the "experts"....I finally figured out how to detect downloads from the webserver log
Jim Leary : not just those items that are viewed but the actual downloads
Andy Daws : How many verys before release ;-)
Rusty Tucker There is one more bug that came up to day. #exec doesn't run CGI's right now, only plug-ins
Jim Leary : That's good...pass up a discussion about client needs because you can't answer the question..same old crap
Jim Leary left the chat.
Rusty Tucker c-ya Jim Leary
Rusty Tucker In TeleFinder User for Mac there is an issue about the voice sliders.
Rusty Tucker and the "Set Download Path" in TeleFinder user for Win doesn't work in 4.0b1
Bob Nunn : Yep I am experiencing that one now. Wanted to change Jim's voice.
Donald McHose : Sliiiiders..but ....down load path for clients is important.
Rusty Tucker I'm not sure why changing the CINT doesn't work for him, that's why I wanted to cover it by voice.
Rusty Tucker Mikael, ready for some speed tests with TeleFinder Server?
Andy Daws : Are there any plans for a stripped down version of TF User I'm finding it hard to convince people to download the Current TF User
Donald McHose : Just tell them the only other choice is to down load the full version of Netscape 4.05.
Rusty Tucker It's only 3MB!
Bob Nunn : Wish you could have been included in that server review in MacWorld.
Bill Gram-Reefer : his pr guy was asleep
Andy Daws : 3MB at UK BT rates seems like an age
Rusty Tucker It won't matter -- Web* has all the biz anyway. I don't think that will change
Bob Nunn : Take out the instructions etc. and make a 1.3 meg version.
Rusty Tucker Just make CD's and send them out...
Rodolfo : Hey Rusty, Do you know if there are some way to check another POP3 e-mail account via HDS plug in?
Andy Daws : Yes I've tried that still big need about 600k touch
Rusty Tucker nope, it only works with TeleFinder's local POP account.
Andy Daws : I send them to big agencies
Andy Daws : But I'm against deadlines all the time for small agencies etc.
Rodolfo : Where or how can I buy TF Server?
Rusty Tucker why not email it to them?
Andy Daws : They don't have E-Mail or Internet or understand it
Rusty Tucker < http://www.spiderisland.com/product/where2buy.html>
Bob Nunn : Why not just set up one of the older client versions. If all they need is the basics some of the early versions will do that for you?
Rusty Tucker Another good link is:
Rusty Tucker < http://www.spiderisland.com/product/y2k_statement.spml> for y2k info
Andy Daws : Yes that's the best idea so far Bob
Rusty Tucker unless they have 33.6 or 56K modems.
Bill Gram-Reefer : drop them. they'll bleed you dry with their ignorance. They'll want you to support their not knowing how to work windoze
Bob Nunn : You should be able to use the later modem settings files to keep up with that tech.
Bill Gram-Reefer : lose em
Rusty Tucker :)
Rodolfo : I e-mail the guys of eclipse.com.uk and they answer to buy it direct from Spider Island
Bill Gram-Reefer : or triple your rate
Andy Daws : If they have fast modems they won't mind downloading the bigger size
Rusty Tucker who is eclipse.com.uk?
Rusty Tucker AM Micro? Are you purchasing a competitive upgrade?
Rodolfo : is the address of ammico
Andy Daws : Going the other way what's happening with TF pro or nothing?
Rusty Tucker They are primarily UK only
Rodolfo : yes Rusty
Rusty Tucker TeleFinder Pro was frozen YEARS ago!
Bill Gram-Reefer : the BIG sleep
Rusty Tucker yes competitive upgrade?
Andy Daws : Why it was really good actually
Andy Daws : One client for all
Rodolfo : Yes a competitive upgrade from WebStar
Rusty Tucker OK - that should be direct from me then
Rodolfo : How
Rusty Tucker there is an order form in the demo package you can fax or email.
Rusty Tucker I can send another if you need it.
Donald McHose : one side note 4-D still has a buy from us now that Spider Island is gone page...if ya want I'll ask the W-master to go hike ;-)
Rusty Tucker 4D?
Rusty Tucker weird!
Bill Gram-Reefer : gots to go to bank bye
Rusty Tucker u bet, take a hike!
Donald McHose : Thought so too.
Andy Daws : Bye
Bill Gram-Reefer left the chat.
Rusty Tucker c-ya Bill Gram-Reefer
Rodolfo : Ok Rusty I have it, I will send you the order form this afternoon.
Rusty Tucker I've been working on a 4D plug-in recently for another company... it will make WS4D OT native.
Donald McHose : Fantastic!!
Bob Nunn : Like to see the results when they come in on the server. Need someone to compare NT on a 400 with TF on a G3 300 and see who wins.
Rusty Tucker It's called "NetTools"
Andy Daws : I used 4D for some time but it to slow have you used CodeBase instead
Donald McHose : Bob wait till 8.5 hits the streets for the real SPEED!
Rusty Tucker info at < http://www.coretechnologies.net/products/NTK/overview.html>, its in Beta now.
Rodolfo : Bye guys and Thanks.
Andy Daws : Bye Rodolfo
Donald McHose : I'll check on it tonight....nightshift ;)
Rusty Tucker Right, Mikael was working on getting a net w/ 100 bt and 2 G3's for some testing.
Bob Nunn : See Ya next time
Rodolfo left the chat.
Rusty Tucker c-ya Rodolfo
Andy Daws : I even had the 4D Compiler
Bob Nunn : Would your plug in be like lasso is to FM?
Rusty Tucker Its different. 4d is uniquely partly because of its powerful scripting language.
Rusty Tucker This plugin adds 100 Networking commands to the language.
Rusty Tucker Enough to implement full Internet servers and clients within 4D itself.
Donald McHose : Boss calling , gots to run see ya.....Please post so I can see the rest of the stories tonight.
Donald McHose left the chat.
Rusty Tucker c-ya Donald McHose
Rusty Tucker WebServer 4D (WS4D) is built that way.
Andy Daws : Wow. Done any speed comparisons
Rusty Tucker 4D is inherently multi-user, so it can run many requests at once, vs. the One at a Time that FM Pro does.
Andy Daws : Native Code compared to 4D scripting that is
Rusty Tucker It seems to be plenty quick, not as nearly as fast as TeleFinder in connections per second.
Rusty Tucker They're still working on the tests for that.
Rusty Tucker The new plugin seems to double the speed of WS4D tho.
Rusty Tucker Maxum's "Phantom" is built on 4D too
Rusty Tucker As is the Cumulus Photo database.
Andy Daws : As I said I started writing in 4D for a advertising database but it didn't cut the mustard even with a lot of indexing. So I switch to CodeBase instead
Rusty Tucker Is CodeBase a C/C++ DB?
Rusty Tucker I think I've heard of it.
Andy Daws : Yes so it take longer to write it is also Client/Server I'll send you details
Rusty Tucker I think I've seen adverts in "Dr. Dobbs" etc.
Andy Daws : Royalty Free as well
Rusty Tucker that's always nice!
Andy Daws : Very!!
Rusty Tucker I'd like some info if you have it or a URL.
Andy Daws : OK I think the URL is www.sequiter.com
Rusty Tucker yep its there.
Rusty Tucker BTW- the subject of spinning out the web server has come up again..
Rusty Tucker this time as an "Open Source" project.
Andy Daws : What's the plan
Rusty Tucker It would remain part of TeleFinder, but also as a standalone server.
Andy Daws : More market penetration maybe the plan
Rusty Tucker Yes, I think it would lead to that for sure.
Rusty Tucker The only other news I have today is.
Rusty Tucker I've put together a small "ident" server.
Rusty Tucker I didn't know much about it myself until I wanted to use IRC the other day, and most
Andy Daws : The only trouble is you may be chasing modes other people have made
Andy Daws : What's an ident Server
Rusty Tucker IRC servers call up your machine's ident server to see "who you are"
Rusty Tucker Basically, an ident server will answer a query like "who's on port 9999 connected to port 6667?"\
Andy Daws : Who you are for real as opposed to who you log on as?
Rusty Tucker right
Andy Daws : Are you planning to tie IRC directly into a chat channel then?
Rusty Tucker so the ident server answers "Rusty" using MacOS etx
Rylos *-jedi joined the chat.
Rusty Tucker Welcome to the chat Rylos!
Rylos *-jedi left the chat.
Rusty Tucker c-ya Rylos *-jedi
Rusty Tucker no, I was just trying MacBitchX on the MacOS Rumours chat
Andy Daws : Gone scared
Rusty Tucker My ident server takes your "Chooser" name and uses it as your ID.
Rusty Tucker That's now really the "owner" name in the sharing setup.
Andy Daws : That's cool
Andy Daws : More MacOSey
Rusty Tucker Some Web Servers may make an ident query too.
Rusty Tucker but I have not seen that happen yet
Bob Nunn : What about Mail Servers?
Rusty Tucker They could, but I'm not aware of any that do.
Andy Daws : Have you every thought of making TFS LDAP compatible?
Bob Nunn : Could help run down a couple of spammers.
Rusty Tucker I think of that as a nice 3rd party opportunity
Rusty Tucker LDAP
Andy Daws : For it to work with spammers they would have to be using Apple IP
Rusty Tucker UNIX boxes all support ident.
Andy Daws : LDAP just seems the logical way to take User Manager
Bob Nunn : We all now that Mac people are too nice to spam.
Rusty Tucker Mail server could use IDENT to find what user name a remote SMTP client is logged in on.
Rusty Tucker You'd probably find it to be "postmaster" , "root", or no answer though for spammers.
Bob Nunn : Yep
Andy Daws : Most of the time it would just be a Mail Relay
Rusty Tucker Mikael, are you there or logging?
Rusty Tucker MF must have a script setup to log the chats. Good idea!
mikael fredriksson : I'm here
Rusty Tucker oh!
Rusty Tucker Do you have that G3 network available?
mikael fredriksson : I have to check at work got back yesterday after 4 week vacation
Rusty Tucker nice - I will be out next week too.
Bob Nunn : I'm jealous 4 weeks....
Rusty Tucker Typical "Euro" :)
Andy Daws : Me too. What are they going to do he hee
Andy Daws : No long shut downs in the UK though
Bob Nunn : All that and potentially having a g3 network with 100base T where you work.
Andy Daws : At least we get to pick holidays
Andy Daws : Where looking at a new 100BaseT switch network sopn
Rusty Tucker AD did you use CodeBase on MacOS?
Andy Daws : Yes Rusty and Win
Andy Daws : I've compiled it under Symantec and CodeBase
Andy Daws : and what for it 10000FX Fibre jealous yet
Rusty Tucker I should check it out
Andy Daws : To many noughts there I think
Andy Daws : CodeBase is extremely fast and support several Database structures native
Andy Daws : Dbase IV, V, FoxPro, Clipper etc.
Rusty Tucker How large is the DB you're running?
Andy Daws : I'll have to check but its somewhere in the region of 10000 records not huge but we need the speed
Rusty Tucker You just use CodeBase 6.4 for Mac, and it appears to include the Windows libs too.
mikael fredriksson : RT can you mail me how to test the web speed
Andy Daws : It sort of windows then you have an add on disk for Mac support
Rusty Tucker I c
Rusty Tucker OK will do Mikael, I'll strip the debug stuff from a TeleFinder Server and send it with a special config folder.
mikael fredriksson : OK
Andy Daws : Damn just remembered no Client/Server Support yet for Mac I think
Andy Daws : unless you use the Java client
Rusty Tucker I'm thinking of Web Based stuff.
Bob Nunn left the chat.
Rusty Tucker c-ya Bob Nunn
Andy Daws : Cheers Bob
Bob Nunn joined the chat.
Rusty Tucker Welcome to the chat Bob!
Rusty Tucker I would use the "client" as the server. Maybe that doesn't support threading tho?
Andy Daws : Welcome Back!
Bob Nunn : IM killed me.
Andy Daws : You could write your own threads I would think
Rusty Tucker Maybe the lib is not thread safe tho.
Andy Daws : I look it up whether its thread safe
Rusty Tucker That's probably the difference in the server package,
Andy Daws : You can open several Data Structures at the same time but on early versions there was some warning
Andy Daws : But I have the feeling it was fixed when the Java version arrived
Andy Daws : I'll check and Mail you
Rusty Tucker thx
Bob Nunn : I guess I had better get back to it. Send me the log please and I will get it up later this afternoon.
Rusty Tucker any other Q's for today?
Bob Nunn : u already know what I want for Xmas.
Andy Daws left the chat.
Rusty Tucker c-ya Andy Daws
Rusty Tucker FTP? :)
Bob Nunn : Bye see u Thur. night? Yes and forward button
Rusty Tucker ahh! I won't be here Thurs.
Rusty Tucker see you all later!
Bob Nunn : Well I will show up and talk to whoever. Enjoyed last one
Bob Nunn : bye
